Hello Fellow FReepers, I have been posting several articles via their HTML source. I notice that apostrophes are not being rendered correctly after the article is posted. I see two square marks in the place of the apostrophes. Does anybody notice the same weird thing?

Finally, something substantive to move us off the Las Vegas shooting incident that nobody knows nuttin’ about: the Harvey Weinstein disgusting pig-man chronicles. I see that Lanny Davis and Lisa Bloom (Gloria Allred's little Eveready Bunny clone) both resigned today as more sordid stories ooze out. And seriously, how scummy do you have to be to have your own brother blow the lid on the story? Bob Weinstein, the disgruntled co-founder of The Weinstein Company, may have been the mastermind behind an exposé of lurid sex allegations that led to his brother’s humiliating downfall, the sources said. What a charming...

Seriously, what is the deal with the gibberish that substitutes for apostrophes when cutting and pasting text? Why can't it be fixed? It makes many posts virtually unreadable. Sorry for the rant, but I have not seen it discussed to any degree and it just seems to be accepted. Can someone please explain this issue and why there is no resolution?
  • Getting Rid of ’ and †in your Posts

I find it distracting to see those squiggles in a post. Usually, the ’ mark is the result of an apostrophe being inserted in the text. When you cut and paste from some articles, a different code (e.g., often Unicode) is used rather than ASCII code for the apostrophe. The †mark suffers the same fate, and is often associated with the "slight lean" that quote marks have in word processing documents. The fix is easy: when you preview your post, highlight the squiggle and replace it with the appropriate character as used in a Free Republic post. The squiggles...

  • Birmingham City Council bans apostrophes from road signs

They’ve been a source of utter confusion to school-children over the years. And it’s a brave adult who can be absolutely certain where to put the little beast. So to make things simpler, Birmingham City Council has decided road signs and place names should not have apostrophes. After years spent arguing the finer points of whether Kings Heath should be King’s Heath, or even Kings’ Heath, and if it would be better to call Acock’s Green Acocks Green, local authority leaders have concluded the safest thing is not to bother at all. All remaining apostrophes will disappear as signs are...
  • Mark Steyn: Nice Goin’, Guys [Newsweek is much easier to flush]

happy warrior MARK STEYN Nice Goin’, GuysNewsweek is much easier to flush. To us old Fleet Street hands, Michael Isikoff will always be the guy who lost the Monica scoop. He had the Lewinsky story first, but his bosses at Newsweek killed it at the last minute. They wanted more sources, more corroboration: It’s all very well having presidential DNA on the intern’s cocktail dress, but we really need a second stain on a second dress before it would be responsible to run this thing. If you can’t get a second dress, the Columbia Journalism School Book of Media Ethics...
