The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that Jason Giambi, a high-priced slugger for the New York Yankees, admitted to a federal grand jury in 2003 that he had been using human-growth hormone (hGH) and steroids for years, in an effort to improve his performance. Steroids allow athletes to exercise harder and develop more thickly muscled bodies than normal. HGH is thought to promote muscle growth. Giambi previously had denied using such agents.
