TransCanada plans to file a second application to begin building Keystone pipeline by 2014, but the company might have to wait even longer, as the State Department says it will have to undergo "a completely new review process." "If TransCanada comes in with a new application, it will trigger a new review process, a completely new review process," Assistant Secretary Kerri-Ann Jones told reporters yesterday. "We cannot state that anything would be expedited or – at this time." The Keystone XL pipeline has already undergone three years of review. Jones was responding to a TransCanada statement that they

Reporting from Washington— The Obama administration will announce Friday a proposed new regulation that would allow certain undocumented immigrants to remain in America while applying for legal status -- a step aimed at keeping families intact and one that may also shore up the president's support with Latino voters. As it stands, people living in the U.S. illegally who leave the country to apply for a green card face years of separation from family members. Depending on how long they've lived in America, once they leave they are barred from returning for up to 10 years.

I'm Getting Arrested is a creative Android app that, according to developer Quadrant 2, was inspired by a real-life "Occupy Wall Street" incident. It lets you quickly notify your family, friends, and crack legal team (if you have one) of your situation with a single tap of your finger.

It might not be the smartest way of giving a zero-weeks notice at work, but you've gotta give this guy some credit for doing extra work and making a custom Mac OS X app just for the purpose of quitting. Supposedly the pop up prompt (which apparently doesn't do anything) was seen by the fellow's coworker who explained the situation: He believed he was in a temp-to-hire position, and after three months of extra hours and butt-kissing, turns out it's just a temp position. He was a good worker too. I'd have recommended him. Too bad he burned his...

I purchased two rifles last week. In Maine one must be checked in a database while at the gun store to make sure one is eligible to purchase. Supposedly this information is destroyed by the state in 24 or 48 hours. I gave my address, which was a PO Box I had to give a physical address and prove it. Why would they want my physical address, if the information would be destroyed in 48 hours. Doesnt make sense.

Everyone knows that the modern mobile phone is set up to do so much more than make a simple call. From checking emails to locating friends, there seems little the latest generation of handsets can't do. However – even in this tech-savvy age – the latest offering in iPhone apps has caused a stir. For just $2.99 Apple is offering customers a service that allows them to find local marijuana suppliers. The news has created a buzz online, as the world's stoners contemplate carrying out online price comparisons between dealers in their local areas.

What a dilemma . . . in order to weather the economic storm, there seem to be only two options: one, go into investment banking and qualify for bailout funds; two, apply for a post in the new Presidential administration. But the banks aren't hiring, so I downloaded an application form to be a part of the new regime . . . say, what kind of questions are these, anyway? Such as: Question 2: Have you ever paid back taxes, penalties, and interest based on non-payment of taxes you obviously owed? / / yes / / no. If your answer...

Robot U by: Deborah Lambert, January 07, 2009 Those who say we’re turning into mind-numbed robots may find ample support for this view in the current crop of college applications. It seems that students’ submissions are so highly polished that they’ve strayed from the real person into “slick misguided attempts at perfection,” says the Wall Street Journal’s Sue Shellenberger. Pity the folks who have to wade through this stuff. A heavy dose of students’ overseas service work starts to read like a travelogue. And school personnel soon detect parental influence after an overload of heretofores and semicolons are sprinkled throughout...

The exciting thing about an Obama presidency - aside from the very real possibility that an inexperienced radical will fail spectacularly and send the whole country plunging to its ruin - is the never ending stream of hypocrisy that flows from the man. I mean, the guy who said he would practice "new politics" of "hope" and "change" appointed a man who said "Republicans can go f@ck themselves" and mailed a rotting fish to an opponent as his chief-of-staff. The guy who said "No" to lobbyists is now saying "Yes" to them during his transition. And the guy who said...

President-Elect Obama need to honestly and completely fill out his own application before demanding such from people who like to work for him. Should he not be held to a higher standard? Fact is he is the MOST UNVETTED, dishonest candidate, always dodging issues or being evasive in his answers to inquiries! Will someone ask him this question during the next press conference? Do you know that the questionnaire being sent by his office to those who desire to serve on the cabinet and other high-ranking posts may be the most extensive in history, even invasive? It includes 63 requests...

WASHINGTON - After years of delay, the Bush administration will submit a formal license application on Tuesday to build a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, government officials have told the Associated Press. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will have three years to review the application, although it could extend that an additional year if needed. The agency's primary responsibility is to determine if the design as proposed will protect public health, safety and the environment. The Energy Department informed key members of Congress and the NRC of its plans on Monday. A truck is to deliver tens of...

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2008 – Operation Homefront has extended the deadline for those interested in one of 25 American Patriot Freedom Scholarships the group offers to children of military families for tuition and other education-related expenses. “The organization is extending its application date to allow the children stationed at military bases abroad additional time to submit their applications,” Arthur Hasselbrink, founder and president of Homefront America, said. With the change in deadline, applications must be postmarked by May 30. Homefront America, with the help of the W. Daniel Tate family and Sara’s Hope, which offers annual scholarships to high...
  • PHP apps: security's low-hanging fruit (Why PHP apps accounted for 43% of security issues in 2006)

Why PHP apps accounted for 43% of security issues in 2006PHP has become the most popular application language on the web, but common security mistakes by developers are giving PHP a bad name. Here's how PHP coding errors have become the new low-hanging fruit for attackers, contributing to the phishing problems on the web. PHP became one of my favorite languages because of how quickly one can write a highly functional, standards-based web application with a database back-end. Unfortunately, attackers are taking these applications down even faster than they appear. I'm sure I'll receive my share of flames under this...

In an attempt to tackle gun crime in the UK, researchers from Loughborough University are developing an innovative identification system that will use CCTV cameras to spot individuals carrying concealed firearms. Starting in June, the three-year multi-environment deployable universal software application (Medusa) project aims to develop intelligent software that can detect a person carrying a concealed weapon in real time. While it is difficult to predict if someone is carrying a gun before crime occurs, Professor Alastair Gale, head of Loughborough University's Applied Vision Research Centre and leader of Medusa, said there are a number of cues the CCTV operator...

  • Enough: End Unconstitutional Judicial Filibusters

When some members of Congress violate the Constitution, how can we have any confidence in their leadership? Yet that is precisely the effect these unlawful filibusters of judicial nominees are having -- undermining confidence in the Senate. Instead of voting yes or no on President Bush's picks for certain federal judgeships, Democrats are refusing to allow a vote to even take place, using a Senate rule that no motion may come to a vote while still under discussion. The filibuster, as it's called, has been used by both sides for over a century and a half to delay votes while...

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- April 2, 2003 -- In a discovery that is likely to impact fields as diverse as atomic physics, chemistry and nanotechnology, researchers have identified a new physical phenomenon, electrostatic rotation, that, in the absence of friction, leads to spin. Because the electric force is one of the fundamental forces of nature, this leap forward in understanding may help reveal how the smallest building blocks in nature react to form solids, liquids and gases that constitute the material world around us. Scientists Anders Wistrom and Armik Khachatourian of University of California, Riverside first observed the electrostatic rotation in...
