California state senator Tony Mendoza resigned Thursday from the Legislature after an independent investigation found that he "more likely than not" harassed several women he worked with during his tenure at the state Capitol. Mendoza, who represents the Artesia area, was suspended last fall when the harassment charges came to light. He denies the charges and his resignation letter called into question the integrity of the investigation. The resignation came after Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León introduced Senate Resolution 85 on Wednesday, which cites the house's zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy and the results of the investigation as grounds...

Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum," Mayor Phillip Burch Mayor of Artesia, NM, a isolated town that houses a federal immigration detention center, said there has been a sudden large increase in the number of illegal immigrants being released from the center into the United States. Burch said, "We have seen some changes in how the cases of these immigrants are being handled. There can be gowing concern about how this is being handled by the government."

The federal government is fining an Artesia oil man more than $700,000 for failing to submit reports on production on its federal leases in New Mexico. The Department of the Interior’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue said Tuesday it has assessed Louis Fulton, doing business as C.F.M. Oil Company, a $717,136 civil penalty.

An estimated 3,000 people attended the Chase Foundation scholarship reception in which President Bush was the keynote speaker. The Chase Foundation awards every graduating Artesia High School student that maintains a 3.0 grade average a paid college scholarship to a college in NM and West Texas.
