When hell breaks loose, a car is a very limited beast. It can carry a lot of stuff or multiple people, but your car is easy to put out of commission - picture a car with more than one flat tire. Cars run out of gas (even idling can use as much as one gallon per hour). Cars break down. And cars can be blocked by debris somewhere very close to your start point, leaving you a long way to go on foot, with no way to carry anything substantial. But what about bikes? You can get just about anywhere...
  • What does Trek have in store for Fabian Cancellara? (CYCLING)

All do respect to Andy Schleck but Fabian Cancellara is a two time winner of Paris Roubaix, the defending champion at the Tour of Flanders and is a four-time World Time Trial Champion. With credentials like that, Cancellara should be just as big a cog in the Leopard Trek machine as Schleck (if not bigger) and I wanted to know how the move was going to affect him?

Washington (CNN) -- The National Transportation Safety Board Tuesday called on states to require all motorcycle riders wear helmets. The announcement, made at a news conference in Washington, is part of the NTSB's "Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety" -- an initiative directed at state governments. The board added motorcycle safety to the list this year and dropped recreational boating safety -- an area it said improvements have been made.

This is an absolute, total, complete, maybe-you're-wasting-your-time vanity! But if you've not read it, I would ABSOLUTELY, 100%, suggest that you find, borrow, buy or steal "A Boy's Life", by Robert McCammon. I really can't explain it. You'd just have to read it. And if you do and you enjoy it, I'd love to get a FreepMail from you about your experience. I've gotten my wife, two kids, dad and mom...all of them to read it... And really...it's an terrific trip. BARTONVILLE — Area bicyclists have launched a statewide petition drive, hoping to keep other cities from adopting rules like Bartonville’s new ordinance, which limits the size of bicycling groups riding through town. More than 2,000 people have signed the petition denouncing the ordinance, according to Robin Stallings, executive director of Bike Texas. The petition went online Aug. 25. About 20 percent of the signatures were gathered at the Hotter’N Hell Hundred bike races in Wichita Falls last weekend. “Most of those names are from North Texas,” Stallings said. The group plans to leave the petition up a while longer, since...
  • Sens. Kerry, Brown like to bike together

It's a bike-a-thon built for two. On Saturday, Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Scott Brown, R-Mass., will ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge, which raises money for cancer research. Apparently biking is how the two senators bond, according to the Associated Press. Kerry told the AP that he and the junior senator from Massachusetts will "just go out and have a good morning exercise ride." Brown said he prefers biking over having dinner or beers with Kerry. (Though we know Brown does go to the bar, being spotted several times at the Dubliner).

Police: Bikes Stolen From Jenna Bush Hager's Home Sat Jun 19 BALTIMORE – Baltimore police say two bicycles were stolen from the home of Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says no one was at the house owned by Bush Hager and her husband when the burglary occurred Friday afternoon. He says there is no indication that whoever burglarized the home knew who lived there. Fingerprint evidence was taken, but no suspects have been identified. The bikes worth about $3,500 combined were taken from a garage, and no entry was made...

PARIS (AFP) – Bikes used at the Tour de France will be scanned to make sure they do not contain illegal motors, the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced on Friday. The move comes following rumours that Fabian Cancellara used 'mechanical doping' during his victories in the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix, which the Swiss Olympic time-trial champion strongly denied. "The members of the management committee discussed issues concerning equipment used in road competitions and decided that it was necessary to bolster measures that have already been put in place (in particular the visual inspection of bicycles, a procedure that...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Many Pittsburghers joined people all around the nation today by keeping their cars parked and taking their bicycles to work instead. It's all a part of National Bike to Work Day. "I bike from Friendship, and then I just usually head down Liberty, cross over to Penn Ave. when I get down into the Strip and I work at the Regional Enterprise Tower," said Jake Baechle, a bicyclist. Baechle says biking is about more then just saving on gas money. "It saves a lot of money, saves on gas, and it's good for the environment and it's...

Happy Earth Day from Obama to all those New York bike riders! Obama has no idea what he just got himself into. Someone sent this photo to the blog This Is FYF, which reports that “citing security concerns that bikes might be secret pipe bombs, NYPD officers clipped the locks of hundreds of bikes along Houston Street this morning in preparation for President Obama’s speech at Cooper Union. The bikes were unceremoniously put in the back of the truck. Onlookers were not given information as to what would become of the bikes. Happy Earth Day!”

On a windy Monday night, Pete’s Candy Store—a bar in Williamsburg with a railcar-shaped performance space in the back—is crammed to capacity with the thin and the bearded. Almost no one is drinking. The mood is pregame, expectant and nervous. We’re at one of the oddest New York City powwows in recent memory: a panel designed to quell a metastasizing dispute between bicyclists and Hasidic Jews. Except no Hasids are present. For a moment, it looks like the bicyclists will have to debate themselves. At immediate issue is the Bedford Avenue bike lane. It’s the longest in Brooklyn and runs...

By the end of May this year, Nanjing will first deliver public bicycles in Zhongshan Mausoleum scenic spot and the Hexi New Town. The bicycle for hire is free in 1 hour, and will charge some fees for more than 1 hour. With the city growing in size and population, traffic is becoming a more serious problem. To deal with this problem, the city government will provide free bicycles. There are four benefits: First, the public can save travel costs. Providing bikes in scenic spots will greatly facilitate tourists. Otherwise, visitors only can rely on foot or by taxi and...

When Munzer Diyya wants to get away from it all, he sits astride his motorcycle and takes to the open road -- all 45 kilometres of it. Diyya has the misfortune of being an open road enthusiast living in the Gaza Strip, a tiny territory sandwiched between Israel and Egypt and blockaded by both. So when he and his buddies gun their engines and head out on the highway, they are reduced to riding only the length of the impoverished and overcrowded Palestinian enclave -- a mere 45 kilometres (28 miles). "I ride slowly to make it last longer," Diyya...

COCOA — Local motorcycle builder Billy Lane turned himself in at 1 p.m. today in connection with a fatal accident Sept. 4. Among the charges Lane faces are driving under influence, manslaughter and driving with his license suspended. Lane, 36, arrived with his lawyers at the Florida Highway Patrol office on State Road 520. FHP spokeswoman Kim Miller said Lane’s blood alcohol level was .192 when the accident occurred on State Road A1A south of Melbourne Beach. She said bond would be set at $15,000.
