Some Sonoma County, California residents are concerned about mountain lions after one lion entered a house, attacked a dog, and dragged the dog by its neck into the backyard, KTLA sister station KRON reports. The attack happened last week when a Bennett Valley resident left her sliding glass door open. The cougar targeted a border collie inside the house and the homeowners heard a commotion. Video sent to KRON shows a snarling mountain lion standing over a motionless dog. “A neighbor came over and fired a shot in the air,” neighbor Ron Crane said. The dog was eventually rescued and...

SIERRA VISTA — Tuesday, Shelia Dahoney was visiting her daughter’s house in the Palominas area when she looked out to what she described as a “teeny front yard” and saw a stray dog doing what she thought was taking care of some natural business. But upon going out in the yard, Dahoney notice a puppy hanging from the female dog. The dog, which she described as a Border Collie mix, was giving birth and having a difficult time doing it. About five-feet away was a puppy which already had been born. Dahoney, a receptionist at the Coronado Veterinarian Hospital, now...

This is our dog. When he was three. He is part Boarder Collie, part Aussie and perhaps something else. Great and beautiful dog. Would love another one, same mix and coloring. Have not had any luck finding one. Our boy is getting old and we would love a new pup for him to train. Any one know of people who breed or have such a beauty? Yes, I know that the shelters have all sorts of wonderful dogs. But this is the kind of dog we are looking for. Chickensoup!!

Cici, a black and white border collie mix was frantically running along Jackson, Missouri's busy Jackson Boulevard dragging her leash behind, when she was spotted by caring driver, Jefferson Fox. Fox was headed to Cape Girardeau at the time and told KFVS Heartland News, "I thought [she] was going to get hit, so I turned in at Shawnee and parked my car, ran down this embankment and found the dog at the next couple of houses." The perceptive driver chased after the dog in hopes of assuring her safety but when she kept evading capture and led Fox to a...
  • Update On Lily The Slain Border Collie (Shot and Killed by Cops)

This week’s Static discusses the police shooting of Lily the border collie, and the training program and potential legislation that were prompted by that tragedy. Mark and Cindy Boling weren’t available for comment last night as Static was being written, but I spoke at length with Cindy Boling this morning and she remains upbeat despite all she’s been through. Imagine unloading groceries at your house and a police officer approaches you on your property. He’s responding to a routine copper theft call but ends up at the wrong address — yours. Your dog (who is like a child to you)...

A B.C. woman who was attacked on her sofa by a starving cougar that strolled into her house in search of a meal says her faithful dog saved her life. Angie Prime, 35, was sitting in the living room of her home in Trail, located in southeastern B.C., on Saturday evening, talking to her husband on the phone and getting ready to take her three dogs out for a walk before turning into bed. Then she caught a flash of something that should not have been in the house. "I just happened to catch something out of the corner of...

N THE age-old war between cats and dogs, canines might just have struck the killer blow. A border collie called Chaser has been taught the names of 1022 items - more than any other animal. She can also categorise them according to function and shape, something children learn to do around the age of 3. Chaser follows in the footsteps of Rico, who trained at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Rico had a "vocabulary" of 200 words and could identify new objects in a group of familiar objects by a process of elimination, according to...

There's an old " Three Stooges" short that features the boys being transformed into gentlemen as part of a bet between two professors. A similar scenario is being played out at Chicago's Anti-Cruelty Society, as the training staff has taken on a challenging fellow named Baxter with the aim of making him adoptable. The mission of shelters such as Anti-Cruelty is to find homes for as many unwanted animals as possible. Unadoptable dogs don't have much of a future, so these organizations try to make them more desirable. This brings us to Baxter, a 5-year-old border collie mix who —...

Just 10 days old, Charlie Axel Woods has made his international media debut – with the son of golf champ Tiger Woods appearing on his dad's Web site. In all, there are five photographs now published on Golf.com of Charlie and the family, who are all shown, in various stages, kissing the new arrival. Even the family dogs get into the picture. Charlie was born Feb. 8, which prompted his proud father to post on his Web site: "Both Charlie and Elin are doing great and we want to thank everyone for their sincere best wishes and kind thoughts." Sister...
