A free meal at school for breakfast, lunch — and dinner? About 450 city students have been eating supper in school cafeterias as part of a government-funded meal program that may expand in Hartford and also to other Connecticut school systems this year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture gives schools about $2.99 per dinner to serve students in after-school activities that involve academics.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Public Schools is apologizing to a Chicago mother and her two young sons, ages 5 and 6, after they were denied breakfast because they came to schools wearing the wrong kind of shoes. The Nicholson brothers only grab a quick snack before heading to class because they qualify for a full free breakfast at Adam Powell Grade School. It’s something they look forward to every day, and it hurt when they were recently turned away. They were wearing black athletic shoes. The boys told their mom that the assistant principal, Angela Peagler wouldn’t let them eat...

  • What's for breakfast?

"I am in weekday breakfast rut! I need something I can either easily carry or eat/prep quickly. I swear I've had every combination of Publix/Other brand bagels + various cream cheese spreads....gone through tons of cereals, oatmeals, frozen foods. Did the hot pocket thing and/or jimmy dean breakfast d'lite frozen sandwich things for a while. I'm not against precooking things either! I've hardboiled eggs the night before and peeled them, or cooked noodles or mashed potatoes and just warmed a small portion in the morning. But I'm tired of all of the above. What do you eat for breakfast?"

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) penned a fundraising letter for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) on Friday asking voters to consider the morning after the election. In one scenario, Franken wrote, it's "8 a.m. You stumble out of bed. Make some oatmeal. Turn on the TV to find out what happened in that Senate race, the one that was too close to call all night. But you gave $5 to the DSCC … And, lo and behold, your favorite Democrat ... pulled it out by a few votes. Oatmeal never tasted so sweet."

The St. Paul district is 1 of the first in the state to offer it. In addition to B2G, the school has earned accolades for its ethnically diverse menu and emphasis on serving locally grown foods. The 12 new schools offering free breakfast...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is inviting medical high rollers to join her at the swanky new W Hotel in downtown Washington. The price of this one-hour soiree? As much as $5000. Hoping to capitalize on the passage of the health care bill — and the massive government expenditures it dictates, estimated to be at least $1 trillion — Speaker Pelosi’s staff is inviting (pdf) “the health care community” to join her in the Studio Room of the W Hotel in what Carmela Clendening (also listed on the invitation) said is an annual rite. She told Pajamas Media that this specific...
  • Cheerios is a drug, the FDA says

Based on the long-time claim by General Mills that its Cheerios cereal can lower cholesterol by 4 percent in just six weeks — when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, of course — the Food and Drug Administration has admonished the giant breakfast cereal producer and said those claims mean the little round “o’s” of oats are to be considered a drug. Simply by indicating the cereal is intended for use as a cholesterol-lowering product, it now falls under the FDA regulations regarding drugs, and because it’s a “new” drug by definition — never mind that...

President Obama bared his soul before a cross section of Christian leaders at a White House Easter breakfast on Tuesday (April 6), where he spoke publicly of his faith in redemption through Jesus in his most personal terms since becoming president. "We are awed by the grace he showed even to those who would have killed him," Obama said, pausing occasionally to glance at written notes. "We are thankful for the sacrifice he gave for the sins of humanity. And we glory in the promise of redemption in the resurrection." Obama said the Easter breakfast, along with a recent Passover...

President Obama today at the National Prayer Breakfast raised the issue of his own eligibility for office – saying that people shouldn't be questioning his "citizenship." Talking about the issue of "civility," he said, "Now, I am the first to confess I am not always right. Michelle will testify to that. But surely you can question my policies without questioning my faith, or, for that matter, my citizenship." Obama continues, "Challenging each other's ideas can renew our democracy. But when we challenge each other's motives, it becomes harder to see what we hold in common. We forget that we share...

TOKYO: There are many theories on the links between food and sex, but Japanese researchers have came up with a new finding — young people who skip breakfast tend to lose their virginity earlier. In a study of 3,000 people, those who did not regularly eat breakfast when in their early teens said they lost their virginity at an average age of 17.5, versus an overall average of age 19 for all Japanese. For those who had a morning meal when they were younger, the average age of having the first sexual experience was 19.4. The study, backed by Japan's...
