The Religious Character of American Patriotism It's time to recognize our traditions and answer some hard questions (1987) Frederick Edwords In the last few years, we have witnessed a number of patriotic celebrations in the United States -- celebrations that have taken on an almost religious expression. In 1976, it was the glorious bicentennial of our independence. In 1984, American jingoistic displays associated with the opening and closing of the XXIII Summer Olympic games in Los Angeles were televised around the world. On July 4, 1986, amid hoopla and fireworks rarely equaled, the Statue of Liberty was rededicated in New...

Richard Clarke's Legacy of Miscalculation By George Smith Feb 17 2003 01:38AM PT The retirement of Richard Clarke is appropriate to the reality of the war on terror. Years ago, Clarke bet his national security career on the idea that electronic war was going to be real war. He lost, because as al Qaeda and Iraq have shown, real action is still of the blood and guts kind. In happier times prior to 9/11, Clarke -- as Bill Clinton's counter-terror point man in the National Security Council -- devoted great effort to convincing national movers and shakers that cyberattack was...

I need help with the wording of a request for the complete financial statement of a public corporation. I suspect that there is some off budget activity and assets that may not appear on the released statements. How can I word a request so there is no wiggle room for them to hide anything?

Should Jose Santos sue the Miami Herald, what do you think? Was it up to Jose to disprove something that didn't exist? Should the Miami Herald have done more investigation before going to print with such allegations?

I think we often tend to forget those in Hollywood who have made a difference, both as great actors and patriotic citizens who have served their country. I will submit a personal favorite and invite Freepers to post their own favorites.

You would think that one of the most frequented sites on the web (per recent Drudge Report article) which deals in jazz audio would support more than just Windows Media Player. Does Microsoft or Bill Gates personally own an intrest in Jazzfm.com?

At 23.8 million dollers in farm subsidies from 1995 to 2000, Tyler Farms Inc. of Helena Arkansas has certainly gotten it's share of taxpayer's hard earned dollars.

For purposes of discussion only Sunday December 30 7:26 AM ET Chinese Death Ruling for Banned Sect BEIJING (AP) - A court in China sentenced the leader of a banned Christian sect to death Sunday, a human rights group said. The founder of the South China Church, Gong Shengliang, was convicted by the Jingmen City Intermediate Court on charges including ``using a cult to undermine the enforcement of the law,'' the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said. The church is banned by the government as cult. Gong's niece Li Ying, also a church leader, was given a ...

For purposes of discussion only -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Christopher J. Barr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CNBC show, Rivera Live, is about the burgeoning White House scandals. It has been almost every night since January. As usual, Rivera is using his one-hour cable show to mount a shameless defense of Bill Clinton. He is clearly smitten with Bill Clinton; he hero-worships him openly. Once actually proclaimed his "love" for Clinton and expressed his desire to "just hug him." Objective journalism is not what this show is about. Before cutting away to a commercial, [August 24th], Rivera has played a tape of Congressman Paul McHale ...

I can't recall ever seeing so many liberal apologist threads on Free Republic. Why the assult today? Is it damage control for eight years of a failed or non-existent foreign policy?
-
Much time and gnashing of teeth has been spent on Free Republic discussing our Government's various SI programs. It would seem, on the surface at least, that those programs have not lived up to the reputation. This single incident today has demonstrated beyond doubt the deplorable state of our signal intellengence program.

The original pledge: The Pledge of Allegiance I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. This version was in the original cartoon when it was made. The same cartoon on this Sunday morning on the Cartoon Network delibertly left the word GOD out of the pledge.

For discussion purposes only: Best democracy money can buy Gregory Palast examines the sources of the $500m that boosted Bush's bid for the White House Sunday, November 26, 2000 Last week, I mailed my overseas ballot for the US presidency -- and you can wipe that smug little grin off your face. I won't put up with condescending comments about America's democratic rituals from a nation with an unelected House of Lords occupied by genetic fossils and, soon, Chris Woodhead. In fact, you could think of the $3 billion spent in the US campaign in positive, New Labour terms. ...

Another victim of NAFTA and political correctness seems to have bitten the dust in the U.S. His demise has gone largely unnoticed since the signing of the NAFTA accords.Yes cartoon lovers, I am talking about none other than "Speedy" Gonzales. When was the last time you saw "Speedy" on television? This has gone too far. They are holding "Speedy" and the crows hostage and I don't think we should stand for it! What do you think?

THE CONSPIRATORS Secrets of an Iran Contra Insider by Al Martin (© 2000 Al Martin) Call toll-free 877-776-9004 to order. by Al Martin Aries II Down: Another Technology Transfer to China In the continuing effort to make China the bogeyman of the 21st century, Washington has scored yet another coup - the loss of the EP-3E Aries II surveillance aircraft. It's very reminiscent of the phony FBI Hanssen Spy Case. In other words, what the US Government is saying just doesn't jibe with the facts. The implausible government story states that the Aries II aircraft was supposedly escorted by ...

While watching Fox News tonight, the brush fires in Florida, and remembering how firefighters use a protective blanket if they are overtaken by the flames, I wondered why someone has not developed a similar tarp or multiple coupling tarps to protect houses. It would beat the hell out of standing on the roof with a garden hose. What do you think, would it work?
