I think you are missing the point of the ad. This is part of a carefully executed plan to rehabilitate the Nike-Tiger relationship and in that regard it is pure genius. If allows Nike to issue a public dressing down to help protect the multi billion dollar golf business they built with Tiger’s help.

Nike is a well run business and their interest is not in what Tiger does off the golf course unless it hurts their image and sales.

Actually, silence is not required to play golf any more than it is required to hit a baseball. The problem with golf is silence, punctuated by cameras going off like machine guns in the midst of the backswing causes a startle reaction and gives the player an excuse for a poor shot.

A steady level of “noise” is part of the PGA Tour. It is the cheers and cameras that cause problems.

The nationalistic cheering has been part of the Ryder Cup (both sides) for as long as I can remember. I believe that it actually helps keep the home team pumped up and I have no reason to see it change. I have attended every major at least once as well as several Ryder Cups. The RC is the most fun event I have seen.

As you chastise the US fans, I don't recall any similar comments about the Europeans at the K-Club in 2006. I was there and their comments on our lousy performance were something to behold. Polite was not part of the experience.

Boo Weakly is a character. There are people close to the US team who think that aside from the points that he won, his greatest contribution was the fact his off beat sense of humor kept the team loose. If that helped us to a win, I am all for it.

Regarding physical fitness, I would point out that few tour players took fitness seriously until Tiger came along. I would remind you that the American with the most Ryder Cup points in history is Billy Casper and he was also never accused of being fit. I also recall another somewhat over weight young pro came on the tour in the 60’s who did quite well. Matter of fact his body shape was very similar to Boo Weakly. Do you remember a young Jack Nicklaus?

Is it Boo’s antics that bother you or his poor old Alabama country boy act that gets on your nerves? The one thing I know for sure is that he’ got game!

  • John Kasich for vice president?

I think you are confusing Dennis Kucinich (D., Cleveland) with Kasich (R, Columbus).

Funny to read the BS about Kasich, Chandra Levy, etc. I can remember when an opponent in the congressional elections suggested Kasich was gay...

The fact is he is a pretty normal guy with pretty good values. By the way, the vote for the assult weapon ban irritated me, too, but not as much as the lame excuse for that vote.

The use of corporate aircraft for legitimate business purposes is unquestionably cost efficient much of the time. The benefits are the ability to be in more places in less time than would be possible on the airlines.

If there is abuse, sooner or later the IRS will pick it up because they have live in audit staff at most large corporations.

I am betting we are seeing the equivalent of a high stakes chicken game. If the smart money believes this, the number for Yahoo is about $25-$26 per share. If they believe the deal is dead, the Yahoo will be about $20.

The real question is how many shareholder suits will be filed on Monday. My guess is that there will be a bunch!!

My objective opinion is that Fred Thompson’s performance in the debate was okay, certainly not great. Duncan Hunter is a fine man and I agree with him on most important issues. However, he lacks the broad name recognition required to get the serious media and voter attention his campaign deserves. Unless he has huge funds, in the range of three times what Rudy, Mitt and Fred have to spend on advertising, he is unelectable. This would change if he had a real strong showing somewhere like Iowa but I don’t see that in the cards.

  • Will FR embrace socialism to make way for Rudy Giuliani as a Republican presidential candidate?

    JonH to Jim Robinson

I am not interested in picking a fight with anyone but the tendency to attach labels to any candidate we don’t like is troublesome. The word “socialism” has a well known definition and there is nothing that I know of that suggests that Mayor Guilani is a socialist based on his actions as a public servant in New York.

I wish that there were a Ronald Reagan out their to lead the conservatives but unfortunately I have not seen anyone who can fill his shoes. In the absence of perfect, we need to find good and get him elected. An economic conservative who is strong on defense is not a bad place to start. Truth be known, the President can’t do much about abortion, prayer in school, etc. other than appoint good Supreme Court Justices.

There are probably savings in the labor but candy production is highly automated. Regardless labor is not the reason candy makers are moving to Canada, Mexico, etc.

The real issue is sugar cost. The US sugar price is about 20 percent higher than the “world” market due to protectionist agricultural programs. The sugar cost is a very big deal in this industry.

Your reprise of Common Tators piece is a welcome piece of rational thought. Where are economic conservative libertarians going to fit if not under the big tent of the Republican party?

At some point, one would think we will all begin to understand that the best solution is to get government to leave us alone to resolve our domestic problems. Before the Interstate Commerce Clause was interpreted to empower the federal government, we were pretty much there, just as the Founding Father's described our republic in the Constitution.

I have no doubt that states, municipalities or neighbors are better equipped to arrive at conclusions that reflect the beliefs and interests of their community.

Winning successive tournaments in golf (medal play) is in my estimation more difficult. A single bad swing can cause two to three stroke swings. This happened at the Buick Open on Sunday. Also the match is played against at least 72 competitors, any one of which can get hot and shoot low numbers.

In tennis, a bad swing costs a point and unless it is match point, there will be numerous opportunities to overcome the mistake. Also, you play matches against one competitor at a time so the risk of a hot player is reduced.

They are both great athletes. Make no mistake, Tiger is a world class athlete.
