"the church is trying to tie G-d's hands on the matter. It doesn't matter what He wants. Sad, really..."

Not so. For the LDS faithful, God has made a proclamation on polygamy. Thus the church no longer condones or endorses polygamy in any form. Those that do are ex-communicated and are not allowed fellowship with the church any longer.

As for them trying to secretly bring it back, what nonsence.

Here's my prediciton for what it is worth.

Shot down in the courts just like Prop 187 in California. I wa in Elementary school when that passed and I thought my teachers were going to crap a brick.

It passed with a HUGE margin and was signed by the governor and everything. Then the Mexican's lawyers took it to court and got the legislative branch to rebuff the will of the people.

You Said -- "you may lose that ability to "lock it down" to one user and five different computers (as is the case with ITMS)."

Not so. Just because someone else can publish music files that function on an IPod doesn't mean that suddenly the inherent copy-protection offered in the AAC format is lost. It would be up to the company producing the music to provide whatever safeguards necessary in their published tracks to satisfy the RIAA.

Second, eventhough Apple is PRIMARILY a hardware company, it stands to reason that they should allow competitors to publish tracks for play on the IPod, thereby increasing the popularity of their HARDWARE product. This Apple software is the only thing that will function on our Apple hardware concept is what lost them their market share in the early 80's and 90's.

You said -- "I can make all the backups that I want of the music and movies that I have from ITMS."

True, but my point was that the French law makes it legal to do so. Under the DMCA, making copies of things that you own the rights to, even for personal use is considered a "gray area" and might even be illegal.

Second, eventhough you have those backup copies, you can still only play those track on Apple authorized hardware. Thereby you are beholden to Apple for your entertainment comsuption. If your Ipod breaks or ITunes software stops working, you are SOL ... Apple can charge whatever they want in order for you to get your music back.

You said -- "Where they are *really in business* -- is -- with iPod."

Exactly. Therefore they must take anti-competitive measures to make sure that no one is allowed to make another machine that can play AAC tracks and that no one can play their AAC tracks on anything other than an IPod. It is anti-free market however, and should be stopped.

This hardly qualifies as state-sponsored piracy. The bill does nothing more than re-iterate what was true in the USA for years before the retarded DMCA.

    1) Private citizens are allowed to make 2 legal backup and archive copies of music/movies/software that they own.

    2) It is not a crime to reverse engineer a competitor's product for the purposes of interoperability. For example, a competing music service provider can produce IPOD playable tracks without violating the law.

This is all common sense stuff, but it doesn't fit with the Apple/M$/MPAA/RIAA business model, therefore it must be stopped.

UHHH ... they're DOGS! Not kids. Comparing this to abortion is intellectually dishonest in the extreme.

On another note, moving in with your boyfriend should not include euthanising your dogs. Give them away or send them to the Humane Society (of course that doesn't preclude them being put to sleep).

People are too attached to their pets. THEY'RE ANIMALS, NOT PEOPLE!!!

Updating the BIOS is a good idea if there is an update available for your chipset. It is not necessary, however, especially if your computer was running fine before hand. Also note that it is not necessary to reformat the harddrive at the same time. The BIOS can be updated without a reformat.

Maybe you should read up on the FairTax before you fly off the handle. Contrary to what this particular nay-sayer is spewing, the FairTax offers the best hope for significant tax reform.

A simple, transparent method of taxation. Items are taxed ONCE and you keep what you earn. Once the Feds are off the Income Tax teat, it will simply be a matter of time before we can kick the states off it too.

This article differs quite a bit from what I have read on the national news sites. It seems that some key information was left out of the other stories and the whole incident makes more sense now.

Rather than a bloody hack and slash in the classroom like the other stories make it out to be, this was a voluntary field trip to a veterenary facility with detailed permission slips signed by all parents of those attending.

I guess Utahns aren't just a bunch of hillbillies like the MSM makes them out to be...

IBM has actually been very supportive of the open-source movement. Not too long ago, they released a big chunk of their proprietary code as opensource. It was quite a boon.

Frankly, Firefox is a better browser than IE. Whether you're talking efficiency, security or speed, Firefox passes it by. Firefox for me all the way.

I have to agree with NonValueAdded. Being from Utah in the recent past, I have kept a close eye on Hatch and I have to say that I'm sorry that I can't be there when he comes up for re-election so I can vote against him.

After his little remarks about circumventing due process to let the government destroy people's computers remotely and his push to allow in-state tuition for illegal aliens; I would vote Democratic before I vote Hatch again.

IMHBVAO, Hatch and Specter need to go the way of all the Senate Fatcats. Forced retirement by term limitation.

No, no, no. This is an attempt to lend validity to the Democrack's "Bush pulls Bin Laden out of his butt for the election" conspiracy theory.

By having this in the "media," they can cite it if, indeed, Bin Laden is captured before Nov. 2.

I for one don't think we need to worry about that. He has managed to evade us for this long, so he'll probably hold out another couple of weeks.

--- As a totally unrelated aside, I learned in med school the other day that Bin Laden shows many signs of Marfan's Syndrome, a disease which can cause aneurysms or stroke. All we have to do is keep him on the run so his blood pressure stays high. :)

    That's enough ranting for now.
