So who has an idea what this person's sly game is? I'm thinking it has (obviously) to do with eliciting something out of someone, but what for?
It might help to mention that the theme of the family dynamic here is that the SIL being asked these questions is a generally unworthy person and a sinner to boot. Doesn't have > $nnn,nnn and didn't finish college either, and that's just for starters.
What's she trying to get out of him, or what is she trying to prove, with a smile on her face?
The subject is open for discussion among folks who know something about what sly, moralistic little Lutheran church ladies are up to.

My friend has been working in a white-collar technical profession, which he will be leaving behind. (This is part of the problematic circumstances he finds himself in.) He is healthy, able-bodied, and intelligent. He is a clean individual with no criminal record and no vices. His problem is that he is no longer marketable in his profession, and he has bills to pay. He has little money in the bank and no help forthcoming from family, etc. He and his wife are on their own except for God.
