The leftists assumed the Muslim kids would reject Islam within 1 generation. Just as they rejected Christianity.

This. Exactly this. They think that all it takes is to educate away their ideology. They forget that their own Christian ideals weren't really rejected in just one generation--it happened over the course of many decades from the Enlightenment to today.

Excellence, we used to live where landlines were ridiculously expensive so we had cell phones only. Even stupid phones have text capability. They met on social media, but by the meet-ups they were texting not messaging. So frightening!! But boys could be lured as easily even if done with a different tempt.

    >> It is a religion of “peace.”
    But what is “peace”?
To Muslims, “Peace” is the absence of opposition to Islam. <<

Thank you for pointing this out. Also, every time you hear someone say that Islam doesn’t condone the killing of innocents, remember that according to Islam, everyone who is not Muslim is By Definition Not in submission to Allah and therefore is infidel and is Not Innocent. That means you. That means me. According to them, we Are Not Innocent and therefore deserve death.

I watched that one, and I have a great deal of respect for someone willing and able to change their minds on an opinion they hold so dear no matter the circumstances. I’ve watched it play out in those around me.

Neighbors of victims of a home invasion became gun-carrying citizens literally overnight. They formerly were staunchly pro-gun-control and no-guns-in-our-house.

A co-worker moved here from a very liberal area and held very liberal views. After spending months treating system-gaming dead beat welfare & disability recipients with a severe case of the gimme’s (a huge portion of the local population) she changed her politics completely. We talked about it a lot and she realized that it wasn’t just a bizarre pocket of system-gaming corruption, but an inevitable though unintended consequence of the welfare system.

People can change their minds. Even liberals. How many of us on here used to be liberal, albeit only when we were young and ignorant and foolish? I think we need to keep on working to change minds through Arpaio’s sort of scenario, and then keep talking to them. Once they’ve had a paradigm shift in one area of their political thinking, it’s easier to help them see the errors in the rest of their viewpoints as well.

He should not have been surprised. Arabs are known to be quite racist and see Indians and Pakistanis as the lowest of the low, fit only to be street sweepers, lawn mowers and house boys. When I was in the middle east, I noticed that most job ads for positions dealing with the public (think hotel courtesy staff) included phrases like “Dutch, English, American, German preferred” or “Non-whites need not apply.”

  • Legislators Block Low-Cost Eye Exams in Michigan

    MWFsFreedom to Sacajaweau

While I understand that eyes are precious and we should all see a real eye doctor at least every couple of years even if we don’t have vision problems, I am also a realist. I realize that people will not get glasses at all (and will drive half-blind) simply because of the prohibitive costs. So really, at least some of the people who use this service would not have had glaucoma or cataract screenings anyway. Also, it could provide a way for people whose insurance only covers every other year eye exams to update their eyeglass prescription every year if their vision deteriorates more rapidly than their insurance can keep up with.

Of course there are people who will use it to save a buck and therefore neglect very important aspects of their health, but I’m not into banning things just because some people will use them to worsen their own health (smoking, alcohol, junk food, large fountain cokes, etc.)

    MWFsFreedom to Ditto

Ditto you’re so right. It’s so frustrating to hear this guy say at the beginning that he has to admit that these programs have unintended bad consequences for impoverished children. He spends the first page and a half explaining how means-tested welfare programs encourage illiteracy & unemployment while discouraging stability, academic success, employment and marriage. But then, after all that, he completely reverses course and says but of course we not only need to keep spending spending spending on these welfare programs, but in fact we need to spend more on them!

He sounded like he almost got it at first, but clearly he absolutely, completely doesn’t. It’s not an issue of how much we’re spending, or that we’re not spending enough. If a small amount encourages some to quit working and fake mental slowness, then large amounts will encourage many to quit working and fake mental slowness!

Please correct me if I read the article wrong, but it appears that the “proof of ownership” the website is looking for is just a picture of the lens with the serial number visible. Problem is, what’s to stop the thief from registering the lens as if it’s legit if the owner hasn’t yet done so? Nothing, really. So a thief could in fact use this sort of service to make a stolen item look legit to buyers.

    MWFsFreedom to Reaganite Republican

Reaganite, you need to differentiate between “free public education, available to all,” and “public education, compulsory for all.” We had free, public education in this country long before we had compulsory attendance laws. I would argue that free, public education is a good thing, but compulsory public education is not. When it’s free and public, people will use it as long as it is good (like charter schools of today). When it is compulsory, most people are forced to use it no matter how crappy it is (public schools today). And when you have such a large audience of compelled students who have no choice but to attend (truant laws), then it’s just too tempting to use such a stage for indoctrination. That’s what the teacher colleges saw, and that’s what they aimed for.

As for me, I’m Paleo, apparently.

Bowling alley alone will lose several weeks or months of business. Same with any restaurants. People that work there wont have paychecks; etc.

Good point. It will be interesting to see if anyone such as bowling alley owners, waiters, dry cleaners, etc. who see a marked decline in income due to this man's use of their shops choose to take legal action against him. Look, the CDC's recommendations for PPEs for healthcare workers is woefully inadequate. Lots of people who "understand the disease" still get it. Clearly, this isn't "settled science" here. Seems to me the "foolish" institutions and people acting with an "abundance of caution" are the ones getting it right.

    > An N95 mask is not enough. The virus is smaller.

I mention N95’s because they would be considered part of “standard, contact, and droplet precautions” and yet the poster contradicts this by showing the personnel using mere surgical masks, which are worse. I’m simply pointing out that the “official guidelines” and these instructional posters contradict. Upon re-reading my initial post, I see I was as far from clear as I could possibly have been. I do apologize for that.

I see no reason why healthcare workers shouldn’t be in duct-taped hazmats each time they enter the rooms.

Let me tell you that as an ER nurse, I put on more than that much protection just when a bloody trauma patient arrives. I’ve seen people put on double that much protection just because a homeless person comes in with maggots in their wounds. I don’t know a single nurse who would dare wear so little to enter an Ebola room.

Also, the CDC guide at my work says “standard, contact, and droplet precautions” but this poster shows plan surgical masks as opposed to N95 masks, which I would want just in case that Ebola patient decides to sneeze, cough, or projectile vomit in my direction.

In the video linked above, it shows people in full protective gear, but they are disposing of waste. The people in direct contact with the patients themselves are being sent in there with WAY less protection, and that is an outrage!!!

Also, this nonsense about “most facilities can handle this” and “our healthcare workers are being trained” is BS. There have been ZERO training sessions at any of the hospitals in my town of 300,000 or at any of the surrounding rural hospitals, and we are in TEXAS! All we have is a 8x5 x 11” flyer that lists what to do if an ebola patient shows up. We don’t even have any of those posters showing how to put on and take off PPEs. Now we ask about ebola symptoms and travel out of the country (but only the patient, not close contacts who have traveled), but it just showed up on our Triage documentation screen one day, no training about it. We are NOT prepared, and the hospitals near you probably aren’t either!

While I suppose you could argue that nothing is impossible, the chance that this oxygen mask could make its way onto this man’s neck on its own without being placed there by someone is so infinitesimally remote as to be, for all intents and purposes, impossible.
