When I came to in recovery from open heart surgery 27 years ago I heard a nurse and a doctor arguing about blood transfusion. The doctor thought I needed a transfusion, the nurse argued against. As I was all tubed up I asked for a pen and paper because I wanted my voice in the argument and did not want the risk of AIDS infected blood, and I scrawled “no transfusion.” Doc was outvoted 2-1. A bit later when I no longer heard my defender nurse’s voice, I became worried. I scrawled a note to the other nurse asking where my defender nurse went. The other nurse told me she would be back in a few minutes as she went for a cigarette break! LOL!
