The fact that Rachel Alexander is female seems to have you more in a tither than anything else. I know her and find her to be quite the conservative. Perhaps you might evaluate your definition of conservative.
Southern Review which was published in the 1830's and then from 1867-1879
As the author taking heat for this piece, and being a southerner, I would be happy to dispatch a photocopy of the journal that was found in archives in Charleston, SC. The spelling was updated.
You bring up several good points that I would like to answer.
There is no attempt to smear Bennett but questions arise from those who donate to EA
While Mr. Bennett certainly did not take a vow not to gamble, with his public denouncements of others who engage in "activities" that represent a moral problem, he opens himself up.
Gambling saves us money? That is quaint and quite out of step with the truth. Government spends a fortune on "rehabilitating" gambling addicts.
As to the immorality of bingo or raffles, there is by no means any implication that they are immoral. As a christian I found them helpful but there is a difference when one purports to be a model moralist, and says that his gambling did not hurt his family, when, in a logical sense, throwing around 200,000 dollars at a time and being involved in such a manner, cannot be anything but a detriment, if not directly, certainly by the damage that is done by the story.
I like Bill Bennett, have met him, and consider him a fine conservative. I only hope that he will recover quickly. That being said, many are let down.
The one point I cede is the comparison to Clinton. That was not appropriate and for that, I offer apologies.
Excellent points Owl. Thanks for offering feedback.
