Hundreds of nurses have staged a protest rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, warning that US hospitals aren't ready for an Ebola outbreak and demanding more action by authorities against a possible epidemic in the US. About 1,000 nurses and healthcare workers attended the Planet Nurse convention on Wednesday, chanting slogans to raise awareness about the increasing danger and death from Ebola. The protesters highlighted the lack of training, equipment and isolation rooms where suspected Ebola-infected patients in the US could be quarantined. They also took part in what they called a “die-in” by laying on the ground in imitation of...

President Obama is tripling the number of Cabinet agencies with gun control law enforcement responsibilities in his new bid to track guns, adding six agencies to the three typically included--Justice, Homeland Security and Defense. Section 1.e of his executive order released Wednesday adds State, Treasury, Interior, Agriculture, Energy, and Veterans Affairs. It reads: "For purposes of this memorandum, 'Federal law enforcement agencies' means the Departments of State, the Treasury, Defense, Justice, the Interior, Agriculture, Energy, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security, and such other agencies and offices that regularly recover firearms in the course of their criminal investigations as the President...

On Sept. 11, Pastor Lindsey Williams, former minister to the global oil companies during the building of the Alaskan pipeline, announced the most significant event to affect the U.S. dollar since its inception as a currency. For the first time since the 1970's, when Henry Kissenger forged a trade agreement with the Royal house of Saud to sell oil using only U.S. dollars, China announced its intention to bypass the dollar for global oil customers and began selling the commodity using their own currency.

During Monday night’s CNN/Tea Party GOP debate, Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann took aim at Gov. Rick Perry’s 2007 executive order requiring middle school girls to be vaccinated against the human papilloma virus (HPV), the most frequent sexually transmitted disease and a leading cause of cervical cancer. Bachmann called out Perry’s financial ties to Merck & Co., the manufacturer of the vaccine, Gardasil — a group, she said, that stood to gain from the order. Bachmann insinuated the governor’s decision may have been swayed by the company’s donations to his campaign. “We cannot forget that in the midst of this...

TWIA a long way from being settled, U.S. Senate field in flux and Perry’s veto of texting bill was rare. House and Senate are out until Friday. The Senate passed its bill reforming the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association yesterday, but it remains far apart from the House. And Gov. Rick Perry said exactly what everyone wanted to hear after the Senate passed its bill. Perry said, “There is still work to be done on this issue, and we must pass legislation to adequately compensate TWIA policy holders without enriching trial lawyers or further undermining TWIA’s financial stability. Reforming TWIA is...

(Reuters) - The Texas Senate early on Wednesday passed a measure pushed by Governor Rick Perry aimed at cracking down on cities that provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants. "Drug traffickers and transnational gangs should think twice before they step foot in Texas," Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, who presides over the Senate, said in a statement. "Prohibiting sanctuary city policies will make the apprehension, detention and deportation of dangerous criminals more uniform -- keeping us all safer and Texas more secure." The measure now heads to the House, which passed a similar bill during the regular legislative session that ended May...

(Reuters) - At least three suspected drug runners in Mexico were wounded in a shootout with U.S. law enforcement officers on the Texas-Mexico border on Thursday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The officers were "attempting to interdict a large drug load" when they were fired upon from Mexico, according to a press release from the department. "A suspicious vehicle on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande River was observed along with two cartel drug recovery boats," the press release said. "Three law enforcement patrol boats arrived at the scene and received heavy gun fire from...

AUSTIN — The House voted Wednesday to deny state funds to public hospitals that perform elective abortions or do business with entities that provide “abortion-related services.” The amendment added by Rep. Wayne Christian, R-Center, to a comprehensive health care savings bill would deny funding to any hospital district that uses locally generated taxes to help pay for abortions, except those required in medical emergencies. The taxpayer-supported hospitals also would lose state funding if they “contract or affiliate with other organizations, agencies or entities that provide or refer for abortion or abortion-related services.” The provision was one of two anti-abortion measures...

AUSTIN -- The Texas Senate approved legislation Monday to allow school districts to furlough personnel and reduce teachers' salaries as parents and educators sounded off against $4 billion in state education cuts in a phone-in town hall meeting. Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, chairwoman of the Education Committee, said SB8, approved by an 18-12 vote, would give school districts more flexibility to respond to budget constraints without firing teachers. More controversial measures moving through the Texas House would enlarge class sizes and eliminate a long-standing minimum salary schedule for teachers.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Rick Perry added immigration legislation to the special session's agenda on Tuesday, including a measure that would remove local law enforcement agencies' ability to make immigration violations a lower priority. Other items he added include how local police use the federal Secure Communities program to check people's immigration status when they are arrested, and checking an applicant's immigration status before issuing driver's licenses and personal identification certificates, according to a statement from Perry.

  • Sanctuary Cities Bill Filed For Special Session

A bill that seeks to ban “sanctuary cities” in Texas has been filed for the special session of the Legislature that began today. State Rep. Burt Solomons, R-Carrollton, filed HB 9, a bill that would prohibit local entities from enacting policies that prohibits law enforcement from inquiring into the immigration status of a person lawfully detained or arrested. Gov. Rick Perry called a special session of the legislature immediately after learning Monday that the Texas Senate would not pass a bill essential to balancing the 2012-2013 budget. His original proclamation did not include sanctuary cities legislation, which he designated as...

AUSTIN — In an unconventional move, Gov. Rick Perry recalled the Texas Legislature into a special session May 31, rather than waiting the traditional period of 30 days before doing so. The special session itself is not surprising; in the closing days of the regular session, which concluded May 30, critical bills on school finance and the state budget collapsed, making an overtime meeting unavoidable. But the timing is a surprise play out of right field. Ordinarily, special sessions are called in July. That way, Perry can veto legislation in June without fear of a legislative override, and it gives...

Declaring, "OK, Amen," Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed the voter identification bill Friday that Republicans have pushed for the past several sessions. "This is what democracy is all about," Perry said. "It's our duty to ensure that elections are fair, beyond reproach." Some Dallas area lawmakers, including freshmen Reps. Cindy Burkett, R-Mesquite, and Kenneth Sheets, R-Dallas, stood beside Perry as he signed the measure that requires voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot.

(CBS News) WASHINGTON - John Dodson, an ATF federal agent, says what he was asked to do was beyond belief. "You were intentionally letting guns go to Mexico," Attkisson asked. "Yes ma'am," Dodson replied. "The agency was." An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms senior agent assigned to the Phoenix office in 2010, Dodson's job is to stop gun trafficking across the border. Instead, he says he was ordered to sit by and watch it happen. Investigators call the tactic letting guns "walk." In this case, into the hands of criminals who would use them in Mexico and the U.S.

HOUSTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to downgrade Dallas' air quality from "moderate" to "serious" after the city failed to meet a 1997 pollution limit and new regulations the agency is considering could put the city even further behind. The announcement the EPA planned to make Wednesday will force the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to submit a plan detailing how Dallas will meet federal guidelines by 2013. But, the EPA plans to unveil a more stringent ozone cap by July 31, making it even harder for Dallas to get in line. .
