West Point has expelled eight cadets and held 51 back a year after 73 were accused in the military academy's biggest cheating scandal in more than four decades. The cadets were accused of cheating on an online freshman calculus exam in May while students were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic. The US Military Academy at West Point has identified the cadet who was killed in Thursday's vehicle accident as 22-year-old Christopher J. Morgan of West Orange, New Jersey. Morgan "died due to injuries sustained from a military vehicle accident at a training area," the academy announced Friday. Alvaro Pablo Velarde, an international student from Lima, Peru, faces two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of abusive sexual contact. WEST POINT, N.Y. — U.S. Military Academy officials were investigating Friday how an apparently healthy, athletic 18-year-old West Point cadet died during a land navigation exercise. Cadet Jacob D. Bower of Fairmont, W.Va., was found unresponsive Thursday by fellow cadets in a largely wooded area used for training. Attempts to revive Bower were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m. The incident and cause of death are under investigation. Temperatures in the Hudson Valley were in the 90s Thursday, but West Point's Lt. Col. Sherri Reed said it was not clear if high temperatures were a factor.

Authorities have identified the body pulled Monday from Goose Lake in White Bear Lake, Minn. as Nicholas Rossini, a West Point cadet who was last seen in December. Rossini, 21, left his family's home sometime in the morning of Dec. 17 and had not been seen since.
