Police Officer Pulls Over His Stolen Car CHARLESTON, S.C. - An off-duty police officer on a Sunday drive saw something awfully familiar — his recently stolen Volkswagen Jetta. "One of the advantages to having off-duty police officers using their patrol cars while off-duty is that they are able to respond to crimes when needed," North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt said. Investigators don't know how the suspects got the car, which was recently stolen from...

Police use bait cars to catch thieves Jun 8, 2004 9:38 AM Areas in Aurora and Douglas counties in Colorado are usually hot spots for car thieves, but since some new technology has been introduced, there has been a reduction in the crime. Police have been using special bait cars, which allow officers to remotely disable the car engine, turn on lights and lock car doors. The cars also are equipped with hidden cameras and a GPS system, so officers can see the reaction of thieves and follow the cars. To see a video, go HERE.

Throw auto thieves into work camps and get them out of Surrey's hair, says tough-talking Mayor Doug McCallum. Fed up with Surrey's high rate of auto theft -- 8,042 last year -- McCallum said yesterday that laws should be enforced to the max. "We need to try encouraging the judiciary to get tougher with repeat offenders," he said. "One suggestion is to send them up to a forestry camp if they are convicted repeatedly. "Provincial law calls for a maximum of two years for repeat auto theft -- and that's what should be given out. They could do tree planting...
