TALLAHASSEE The oldest and largest psychiatric hospital in Florida was left inaccessible as Hurricane Michael carved its path across the Panhandle, knocking out power and ripping buildings to shreds. The storm’s eyewall passed right over the town of Chattahoochee, leaving it and the hospital “entirely cut off,” state emergency officials said Thursday. The hospital was not evacuated ahead of the storm. Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee, which had about 975 residents and about 325 staff staying inside, was left with only emergency radios as a means to communicate with first responders. The hospital had backup power and water systems that...

A body pulled from the Chattahoochee River is that of an Atlanta researcher reported missing more than seven weeks ago, Atlanta police said Thursday. Timothy Cunningham, 35, was last seen Feb. 12 leaving his job at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after telling colleagues he didn’t feel well. Cunningham’s family and police located his keys, wallet, cellphone, vehicle and his beloved dog, Mr. Bojangles, inside his northwest Atlanta home.

Let me see if I have this right. According to the Thought Police, Duck Dynasty’s patriarch Phil Robertson is a bigot because he said what the majority of the planet believes namely, that men prefer a woman’s yoo-hoo instead of a man’s Chattahoochee canal? I know that’s not exactly what he said during the GQ interview where he dared to tell everyone what he or she and A&E already clearly knew he thought. I merely cleaned that sentence up for the children. And by children, I mean the rabid gay adults who freak out when they read the words “vagina”...

Bethea said federal officials tested the river and found the E. coli bacteria level was 42 times greater than the highest safe level. “There is no way you want to get in or even touch water [this dirty],” Bethea said. “I’ve never seen the water so filthy. It was just filthy, and it didn’t smell very good in some places.” The river tour also found massive shoreline damage, including collapsed banks and fallen trees. --snip-- The U.S. Park Service on Wednesday shut down use of portions of the Chattahoochee, citing the dumping of raw sewage from broken sewage lines in...

Florida, Georgia and Alabama Close to Reaching Water Sharing Deal By: Brendan Farrington The Naples Daily News May 17, 2003 TALLAHASSEE — The governors of Florida, Georgia and Alabama said Friday they have almost completed an agreement on how to share water from three rivers flowing through their states, saying the major point to discuss now is the length of the agreement. The three states have been arguing for more than a decade over the water flowing through the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, but the Republican governors expressed hope that an agreement would be in place by a July 31 deadline....

WEST POINT -- The coffee-colored waters of the Chattahoochee River are a bone-numbing 52 degrees. The brisk wind adds a bitter edge to a frosty November morning. At the water's edge, a dozen divers, swaddled in layers of neoprene, with snorkels, regulators and clipboards dangling from their wet suits, make final checks of their gear. They are eager to enter the river, even though one quips, "It's so cold velcro won't stick."The divers are the first of what state officials hope will become a legion of sport divers interested in surveying and preserving the forgotten history that lies beneath Georgia's rivers,...
