Christmas Island red crabs are a delicious, easy-to-find seafood option on the island. But can you really eat them? Here’s everything you need to know. There are two types of Christmas Island red crabs: the large deep-sea species and the smaller tropical species. The deep-sea species is higher in fat and cholesterol, while the tropical species is lower in fat and cholesterol. Both types of crab are safe to eat, but some people recommend avoiding the deep-sea species because it may contain more toxins. A new paper explores how gene-editing technology could be used to bring a species back, but even its authors have concerns about what that could mean. If Tom Gilbert could bring any extinct animal back to life, he said, it wouldn't be dinosaurs or woolly mammoths or any other megafauna that once roamed the planet. His is a humbler choice: the Christmas Island rat, a species that was wiped out from its island home in the Indian Ocean more than a century ago. Gilbert, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, admitted that his pick may not be...

One of Australia's greatest mysteries has finally been solved thanks to advances in DNA technology, with the 'Unknown Sailor' finally identified exactly 80 years after he died. Thomas Welsby Clark was just 21 years old and an able seaman on HMAS Sydney when it was sunk on November 19, 1941, about 200km off Western Australia. He had trained as an accountant in Brisbane, then served in the army before finding a berth on HMAS Sydney. His remains washed up on Christmas Island, 2,600km north-west of Perth, 11 weeks after the HMAS Sydney was lost, and it was all that was...

The exponential growth in global food production has not only sent the price of fertilisers skyrocketing, but could lead to a world shortage of phosphate within decades. Beyond a temporary market spike driven by richer developing countries and increased supply of biofuels, researchers are warning that the world could face dwindling supplies of phosphate by 2040 unless steps are taken to use it more efficiently and recover it from human waste. But unlike oil, which can be managed by substituting other sources of energy, there is no substitute for the critical role of phosphate in plant development and production. Mineral...

ASYLUM-SEEKERS doused their boat in petrol before a dawn explosion that killed three people off the northwest Australian coast, West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says. Mr Barnett said it was unclear how the flames ignited. "It is understood that the refugees on the boat spread petrol and that ignited causing the explosion," Mr Barnett said. Mr Barnett would not elaborate on the claim when questioned further. The Commander of Border Protection Command, Rear Admiral Allan du Toit, would not comment on the cause. “I really can’t speculate on the cause… I do emphasise that this is an ongoing incident," he...

Toxic Tugs - Public Poisons by J.B. Stone - 04/17/02 What do Maryland, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, Johnston Atoll, and the Marshall Islands have in common? BioChemical warfare tests were conducted in all of them behind a blinding haze of Cold War secrecy. And hardly a word of warning was ever issued, before during, or afterward the test conductors, subjects, or citizens living in surrounding areas. Marine jets and Army artillery sprayed "harmless simulants" and live biological and chemical agents on unsuspecting citizens for 15 years on land and sea during Operation Deseret. The randomly selected human test rats onboard ships...
