Are There Devout Christians In Denominations? John 10:16 Sadly, many in our brotherhood would answer “yes” to this question. Denominations have for years taught that it does not matter what church you attend, as long as a person is sincere and honest. Many in the Lord’s church have swallowed this idea. They cry long and hard that there are sincere, devout Christians in any given denomination. It is no wonder, then, that many congregations of the Lord’s church have joined hands with denominational churches to promote or to participate in any number of things. Of course, they consider their...

A Filipino church called Iglesia Ni Cristo, or Church of Christ, is the buyer of 59 parcels of land in Scenic, paying $700,000 for the properties, Pennington County records show. What the church plans to do with the nearly empty Old West town on the edge of the Badlands remains a mystery. The church hasn’t said anything about its plans for the property, and calls seeking comment from church offices were not returned. Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom and county Planning Director Dan Jennissen each said their offices have had no contact from the church. A variety of sources describe...

He wanted an apology to Emma Smith's family. "What?!" Brigham Young's descendants said, according to Mary Ellen Elggren. "What are they talking about?" In 2007, Elggren was president-elect of the Brigham Young Family Association when she first heard that Michael Kennedy, president of the Joseph Smith Jr. Family Organization, wanted an apology. "I was totally puzzled over this," Elggren said. Kennedy, however, was not puzzled. He was baptized as a Mormon in 1973 -- the first male descendant of Joseph and Emma Smith to join the LDS Church and be ordained an elder. He knew firsthand the prejudices that kept...

David Runnion-Bareford, founder of Biblical Witness Fellowship (BWF), called for the mainline Protestant denomination, which includes President Barack Obama as one of its members, to publicly repudiate the anti-Semitic statements which were made this week by Rev. Wright, who served for many years as Mr. Obama’s pastor at the Trinity...

For nearly three decades the Republican party has built its election victories in the United States on the power of the Christian Right. But now it is facing the prospect of a "God void" by selecting a presidential candidate who is not a churchgoer. In a recent Gallup poll, 55 per cent of Americans said they went to church at least once a month. Neither the thrice-married Rudy Giuliani nor the twice-married Fred Thompson, the two front-runners for the party's nomination, go to church regularly. John McCain, also a divorcé, once described evangelical leaders as "agents of intolerance". All have...

Q:My grandson is marrying a lovely young lady of a different faith. She did not want a wedding in her church because instrumental music was not allowed. She also did not want to get married in our church. She wanted a backyard wedding. Would you please enlighten us on the beliefs of the Church of Christ? Elaine, Piedmont A:Each Church of Christ traces its heritage to the Restoration Movement that swept the new American nation in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Baptists in New England, Methodists along the Middle Atlantic Coast and Presbyterians in the Appalachian Mountains, among others,...

Evangelical prof 'bets' $100 TV star not active in church Doubts continue to swirl over Fred Thompson's faith even among members of his own church. First, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson was reported to have said the Republican presidential hopeful is not a real Christian. Thompson shot back that he's not only a Christian, but a member of the fundamentalist Churches of Christ. Now a political science professor at a Church of Christ-affiliated college charges Thompson is a "lapsed member." And he has issued a challenge on the Internet to anyone who can come up with evidence that...

I would like to say in the beginning that I have no animosity whatsoever against Baptists. Personally, I have no reason for leaving the Baptist church, but quite to the contrary, if personal reasons counted, I would never have left the Baptist Church, because personality is in their favor. Especially is this true of the congregation of which I was a member in Phillips, Texas. I believe that the Baptists are, for the most part, splendid people. I believe that most of them are honest and sincere. I believe that, if there are Baptists here tonight, most of them want...

SELMER, Tennessee -- A preacher's wife told authorities she shot her husband after a long buildup of domestic problems, according to an audiotape that prosecutors played Friday at her murder trial. SNIP Investigators have said she admitted shooting her husband on March 22, 2006, and that it had something to do with his constant criticism. On the tape, she says the couple's domestic problems had reached a boiling point after many years of conflict. "It's just a lot of stupid stuff," she said. "I love him dearly, but gosh, he just nailed me in the ground. ... The first of...

SELMER, Tenn. — A young minister's wife walked into court with her lawyers Monday for the start of her murder trial in the shotgun killing of her husband in their church parsonage. Mary Winkler, a quiet mother of three, was met by a crowd of photographers and TV cameras as she arrived for the start of jury selection. Authorities said Matthew Winkler, 31, minister at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in this small western Tennessee town, was struck by a single blast on March 22, 2006. His wife was arrested a day later in Orange Beach, Ala., some 340...

One day a preacher said to a friend, "We have just had the greatest revival our church has experienced in many years." "How many did you add to your church membership?" "None. We lost five hundred." —Brennan Manning, The Ragamuffin Gospel When I considered the possibility of moving from Bellingham, Washington, to Tulsa, Oklahoma, the question wasn't just why I would exchange Mount Baker for oil country. I'd come to a fork in the road. Was it time to plant an emerging type church? Or could I help an existing modern-ish church position itself for ministering to the next generation...

DALLAS -- The United Church of Christ has accepted a predominantly gay Dallas megachurch into its fold. That means about a quarter of the mainline denomination's members in Texas and Louisiana attend the same church. The North Texas Association of the Cleveland, Ohio-based UCC voted 32-9 last month to admit the 4,300-member Cathedral of Hope after a year-long courtship. The cathedral bills itself as “the world's largest liberal Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.'' The cathedral becomes the fourth largest church in the denomination. It decided to affiliate with the UCC after the...

[caps and emphasis in the original] One of the three major movements within the Campbellite family of American Protestantism, and the one most recent in origin (although the Disciples' "Restructure" dates only to 1968). Its separate identity begins officially with action taken at a Christian Church convention in Cincinnati in 1927. By 1971 this body of independent congregations had sufficient particularity and cohesion in its own eyes to request a separate listing in the Yearbook of American Churches. This "undenominational" fellowship stands to the right of the CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) and to the left of the CHURCHES OF...

Ashland attorney Steve Farese, who heads Mary Winkler's legal defense team in Selmer, Tenn., says he and her other attorneys want a psychiatric evaluation for their client. Tennessee authorities claim Winkler has confessed to killing her husband, a Church of Christ minister, in their Selmer residence last week. The couple's three children reportedly were in the house at the time of the slaying. Winkler apparently fled with her children to southern Alabama, where she was arrested late last week. They have been placed in the custody of their maternal grandparents. Farese, in a telephone interview after an arraignment in Selmer...

Members of the Cordova Church of Christ in Rancho Cordova, California, said goodbye to members Janice Rogers Brown and her husband, Dewey Parker, on Sunday, July 3, before their departure this week for Washington, D.C. On the 4th June 1986 I was baptized and became a member of the Central London Church of Christ, now known as the London Church of Christ. I was 31, owned my own house, had a car and had a well-paid career in computing. However I had for many years felt that my life was incomplete and purposeless and I was happy that I had found the answer I was looking for. Sadly everything was not as it seemed. After much heart searching my husband and I came to the conclusion that there were many abuses in the church by...

Brownfield church loses precious links to past in fire BY P. CHRISTINE SMITH AVALANCHE-JOURNAL A day after a raging fire destroyed the Brownfield church that many called their second home, a small group gathered to watch firefighters try to knock down a smoldering resurgence of the blaze before it got worse. The 54-year-old Brownfield Church of Christ building at 502 Lubbock Hwy. is a mere shell of its former self, but it is the loss of fragments of the past that so many mourn. "We had a lot of history in the library," said Debra Graham, the church's building and...
