Mask mandates are back in Dallas County. As of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, all businesses, public schools, and county buildings must require mask-wearing to prevent the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, according to an executive order signed today by Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. Due to the coronavirus spread, Judge Clay Jenkins ordered that Dallas County is to shelter-in-place starting Monday.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins spoke with WFAA Tuesday afternoon after Gov. Greg Abbott rescinded a mask order, which goes in effect next Wednesday.

In Texas, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins called on Gov. Greg Abbott to reinstitute stay-at-home orders and other strict measures to stop the spread of the deadly and infectious coronavirus as cases surge throughout the state. In a letter dated Saturday, but released to the public on Sunday, Jenkins asked Abbott to reinstitute stay-at-home orders for a month, enforce universal mask-wearing and physical distancing through fines, limit events and reduce indoor gatherings to 10 people and outdoor events to 100, among a slew of other recommendations.

It isn’t even clear if Dallas is on the RNC’s shortlist of convention sites now that North Carolina has lost it but Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins wants to make his opinion known – he’s a firm no on the city hosting it. Jenkins cites his concern for the potential of a large gathering spreading the coronavirus. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, also a Democrat, has not extended an invitation to the RNC to host the convention in that city, though the city bid on hosting the 2016 convention.
