CNN is closing its offices to employees who do not need to work in person. In an internal memo to employees on Saturday and obtained by The Hill, President Jeff Zucker said the move was being made "out of an abundance of caution," and is tied to a new wave of coronavirus infections sweeping the nation. The decision to scale back in-person work "will also protect those who will be in the office by minimizing the number of people who are there," the network said.

  • Maybe the children whose schools are still closed are the lucky ones: Two more tales of madness from America’s schools remind us that there is an upside to having teachers refuse to teach

There are currently two dominant narratives about K-12 education in America: The first is the fact that many teachers in huge urban school districts are refusing to return to their classrooms. The second is the fact that the schools that are back in business are using their power over people’s children to indoctrinate both the children and their families in hard-left ideologies, especially about race and sexuality. In many Republican-run regions across America, schools are back in session and nothing bad has happened. There hasn’t been a mass teacher or student die-off. Instead, the kids are once again learning and socializing...

Lockdown measures, such as closing schools, likely prolonged the epidemic by preventing the virus from naturally moving through low-risk populations and building herd immunity. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that the closing of schools in response to the novel coronavirus could actually increase overall deaths resulting from the disease. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh reevaluated a model produced by the Imperial College London earlier this year that prompted the extensive government lockdown measures, including the closing of schools, implemented in the U.K., ... school closures and isolation of younger people would increase the...

Cheese’s parent company, CEC Entertainment, approaching bankruptcy. The Wall Street Journal reports that CEC is asking lenders for a $200 million to keep its business going. Pier 1 Imports is calling it quits. The bankrupt home-goods retailer has asked a court for permission to liquidate its remaining 540 stores once they reopen after coronavirus-driven lockdowns, ending a 58-year legacy of selling glassware, wicker furniture and other home decor. Pier 1 said it is in talks with several prospective buyers to sell its remaining assets, including its intellectual property and e-commerce business, during a court-supervised auction on July 15. The company has tapped Gordon Brothers to begin liquidating its locations this weekend across the US, according to court documents. “It is now clear that Pier 1’s future...

Looking past the distraction of releasing terrorists from Guantanamo, there seems to be another reason for Obama wanting to close it down. The Guantanamo Naval Station is an important asset connected to the defense of the United States and helps America keep an eye on the communist government of Cuba which aligned itself with Russia during the 1960s which then imported nuclear weapons into Cuba. Those who do not recall the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960s need to read: The Cuban Missile Crisis and Threat of Nuclear War The Guantanamo Naval Station is a strategic outpost on a landmass...

Sandbar Lounge, a downtown Casper institution, will close for good Saturday, and its owner says the city's recently imposed smoking ban is to blame. “The smoking ban destroyed the bar, as I foretold it would,” Nancy Goddard wrote Monday in a post on the Sandbar's Facebook page. “I have cried a million tears and will probably cry a million more again. I apologize. I tried and failed. God bless.” Casper residents voted Nov. 3 to reinstate a 2012 smoking ban on bars. More than 6,000 voters cast ballots, with 54 percent voting in favor of the ban. Ban supporters, such...

The 13 are among Target's nearly 1,800 stores in the U.S.

A Chesapeake park ranger was caught on camera pointing his pistol at a couple. It was a confrontation that started because the couple left a city park after closing time. “I was hoping he wasn't going to shoot at us,” says Dylan Newton, who recorded a 7-minute video of the ranger. “With all the things going on in the media with cops using excessive force and all these videos coming out like that's the only thing running through my head like I’m going to be one of these people.” Newton says it all happened Sunday night at the city's Northwest...

The West Side Target, located at 3720 Soldano Blvd (in the Consumer Square Shopping Center off West Broad Street), will be closing their doors sometime in November. A part time employee tipped us off in a discussion about West Side redevelopment ideas on our messageboard, noting that the decision to close was made about a week ago. A call to the store this morning confirmed the November closure, though a final date is still unknown at this point. Large retail centers have struggled to attract and retain tenants on the city’s west side over the past several decades, with the...

For instance, earlier in April the company announced it is testing out a larger, pricier, third-of-a-pound burger for $5, two years after dropping the similar Angus burger line because they were too pricey for McDonald’s diners. Despite that earlier failure, new CEO Steve Easterbrook expressed confidence his customers would go for premium burgers. “I often describe McDonald’s as possibly the most democratic -- with a small ‘d’ -- brand in the world,” he said. “And what customers love the world over, and none more so than here in the U.S., is how they can buy into aspirational quality products, but...

Employees say a Brandon Walmart near Valrico gave them little notice before closing for six months. “When I drove into the parking lot, it was full. I knew something was not right,” said a Walmart employee who asked that News Channel 8 not identify him. “We have had plumbing problems over the last few years.” The store closed Monday at 6 p.m. because of the ongoing plumbing issues. The employee News Channel 8 talked with said a sewage backup is the likely culprit. The issues “require extensive repairs,” Walmart spokesman Amanda Hennenberg said in a statement. KALAMAZOO, MI -- Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan is closing its Battle Creek clinic, citing "increasing competition and declining patient demand" as a result of the Affordable Care Act. The last day of operation will be Jan. 31. Spokeswoman Desiree Cooper said the need for Planned Parenthood's health-care services has declined because of the ACA, which has greatly improved access to subsidized contraceptives and women's health-care services. The ACA requires insurances plan to provide women with an annual physical and contraceptives without a deductible or co-pay. That means women who formerly were reliant on Planned Parenthood for services and...
