"Longtime Democrat Toby Keith is registering to vote as an independent and says the left wing's verbal attacks against Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin could lead to a win for John McCain in November, the singer-songwriter said Thursday (Oct. 2) in an interview with CMT.com." "I've been a lifetime Democrat, and I'm re-registering this year as an independent," he said. "It's strictly [because] my party, that I've been affiliated with all these years, doesn't stand for anything that I stand for anymore. They've lost any sensibility that they had, and they've allowed all the kooks in, so I'm going...

Jeff Foxworthy's Passionate, Show-Stopping Speech at the CMT Awards Nashville, TN -- The CMT Music Awards have a grand history of show-stopping performances, all of them rendered by such country music superstars as Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich, to name only a few. But it was host Jeff Foxworthy who stopped the show this year, when the generally genial comedian delivered a powerful, heartfelt and somewhat angry speech just before introducing the last song of the night, the haunting Anyway by Martina McBride. Foxworthy had during his previous two gigs as host of CMT's annual...

The Dixie Chicks are nominated for video of the year at the CMT Music Awards — their first such nomination since country radio unofficially banned them. But since Monday's Country Music Television awards are voted on by fans — not industry insiders — don't look for a big thaw between radio and the Chicks. The Texas trio is up against Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, George Strait, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts and Kenny Chesney for the night's top honor. They're also nominated for group video of the year for their single "Not Ready to Make Nice." The Chicks have been...

The Okie from Muskogee speaks out. Merle Haggard Takes Another Musical Stand: Outspoken Musical Icon Urges, "Rebuild America First." No audio yet, but Haggard's new Chicago Wind CD, out next Tuesday (Oct. 25), includes the tune in the headline. Chet Flippo (yes, the early Rolling Stone senior editor, now at Country Music Television as CMT/CMT.com Editorial Director) quotes some of it: "Yea, men in position but backing away/Freedom is stuck in reverse/Let's get out of Iraq and get back on the track/And let's rebuild America first." Haggard also comments on the current political and social scene in the song, "Where's...

FRANKLIN, Tenn. Country singer Mindy Mc-Cready was arrested today and charged with prescription drug fraud. Authorities said she used a fake prescription to obtain the pain medicine OxyContin. Investigators said the 28-year-old Mc-Cready presented a fraudulent prescription at a pharmacy last February, paid for the drugs and then left. Officers said they later learned that Mc-Cready was not a patient at the doctor's office from which the prescription purportedly originated. Mc-Cready was released on ten-thousand dollars bond. The singer had a Number One hit in 1996 with "Guys Do It All the Time."

I know this is a vanity and it will probably be pulled, but I'M MAD AS HELL AND I DON'T WANT TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! It's like it open season on Republicans and Conservatives on any kind of media and we can't respond and it's only going to get worse. Sometimes it's overt like Michael Moore, and other times it's subtle and that is far more dangerous. I was watching the Country Music Television's Top 100 Love Songs. (Yes, you read correctly). You know these kinds of shows. They count down the top songs with celebrity comments. You'd think it...

  • 'Grand Ole Opry Live' leaving Country Music Television for smaller network

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The live telecast of the Grand Ole Opry is moving from Country Music Television to its smaller competitor, Great American Country. The hour-long country music show, "Grand Ole Opry Live," has appeared on CMT every Saturday night since 2001. It draws 1.5 million to 2 million viewers and was CMT's highest-rated weekly series. The move means the TV broadcast will reach fewer viewers. Great American Country, started in 1996, reaches only 25.2 million U.S. households, compared to the more than 70 million households reached by CMT. "There isn't a bigger, longer-running music show on TV...

"The Perfect Country and Western Song"A lot of things happened last week that might seem worthy of discussion. Martha Stewart got indicted. Sam Waksal of ImClone was sentenced to seven years in jail (this week). The naughty bits of Hillary Clinton's autobiography leaked out a week early. Howell Raines and Gerald Boyd resigned from the New York Times. And the Israelis and Palestinians took tentative steps toward a hint of a beginning of peace. But there was another story last week of greater truth and enduring importance. Country Music Television (CMT) announced the top 100 country songs of all time....

CMT picks 100 greatest country music songs 06/05/2003 Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. - George and Tammy are there. So are Johnny and Hank, and Waylon and Willie. But a ranking of the top 100 songs in country music history is bound to contain a few surprises, and the new one by Country Music Television is no exception. Is Tammy Wynette's 1968 classic "Stand by Your Man" truly the best country song of all time? Should Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" rank that high (No. 6)? Is the Eagles' "Desperado" really a country song? And where's Merle Haggard's "The Fightin'...
