FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Former Cleveland, Ohio mayor Dennis Kucinich, one of nine people seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, promoted his peace platform Sunday in Connecticut. Speaking before more than 200 people at a forum at Sacred Heart University, the four-term Ohio congressman, said he would establish a "Department of Peace." An early and vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, Kucinich said the department would have various function to prevent violence both domestic and internationally. He said the department would work with the United Nations and other countries before conflicts arise.

<p>This past April, Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio introduced legislation that would establish a Cabinet-level Department of Peace. I -- along with thousands of others -- have lobbied our congresspeople and advocated the idea however possible to friends and associates.</p>

Apologies to John Lennon, but all they're saying is that we should give the Department of Peace a chance. The Department of Peace would be created by legislation sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio Democrat and presidential hopeful.........This Cabinet-level department, with a secretary of peace, would stress conflict resolution. Domestically, the peace secretary would, after appropriate federal agencies are merged, tackle such issues as domestic violence, child abuse, gang violence, drug abuse and civil rights. Internationally, the secretary's duties would include dealing with human rights, the proliferation of arms (including weapons sold by the United States) and generally stopping...
