The Foreign Ministry confirmed today that Eli Shaked has been named as Israel's new ambassador to Egypt. Shaked replaces Gideon Ben-Ami, who is retiring, after serving in Egypt for two years. Shaked once worked at the Cairo embassy and also served as head of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. In 1979, Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel. However, relations have remained cool. In November 2000, Egypt withdrew its ambassador to Israel, in protest against Israel's crackdown on Palestinian violence in the territories.
