The U.S. Customs area at Detroit Metropolitan Airport was briefly shut down today after a passenger claimed he had contaminated everyone on a flight from Amsterdam. Officials say a U.S citizen got off a Northwest Airlines flight and implied to the crew he had a biological agent of some sort and had contaminated the flight. Airport emergency medical technicians examined the man and decided that he did not pose a health risk. The man was eventually allowed to leave. Sources say that a week ago, Thursday or Friday, a bomb inside a small black box was found on a departing Mesaba Airlines flight, after passengers had boarded (Mesaba is a commuter airline that partners with Northwest Airlines on connections). CNN) -- An explosion at a hazardous waste plant rocked suburban Detroit late Tuesday, sending fireballs and billowing smoke hundreds of feet in the air. There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities. Authorities with the Romulus Police Department and the fire department said the explosion happened at a chemical plant shortly after 9 p.m. and that a half-mile radius around the facility has been evacuated, including a nearby Ford plant.

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - Two Northwest Airlines pilots said laser lights were shone into their cockpits as they were about to land their planes at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, authorities said. A flight from Orlando, Fla., landed safely at 7:20 p.m. EST Thursday, followed at 8 p.m. by a flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica, FBI Special Agent Terry Booth told The Detroit News. The pilots told air traffic controllers that green laser light came from an area along Interstate 94 just east of the airport.
