WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2006 – The concept of embedding coalition advisers in Iraqi army units has proven so successful that it will soon be implemented in the Iraqi police units as well, President Bush said following a meeting at the Pentagon today. Flanked by Vice President Dick Cheney and speaking to reporters following a meeting with his national defense team and three top commanders in Iraq, the president praised progress being made in boosting Iraq's security forces in both numbers and capability. He cited the key role these forces played in maintaining security during the Dec. 15 elections. That effort...
  • How can we contact the US military to demand the end of the embedding of reporters? (vanity)

Subject says it all. I believe that there are pro's to the embedding process, but if so many reporters are practically praying for atrocities to be committed by US troops, or hoping the Iraq war will fail, I think it is a DANGER to the troops to send the reporters with them on their missions. As we have seen, a Marine is now being accused of a war crime for shooting an unarmed insurgent. However, it is pretty clear that the Marine was not aware of the fact that the man was injured, and given the fact that insurgents routinely...

Pentagon Ponders Embedded Reporter Policy By MATT KELLEY .c The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon may make it official policy to include journalists with U.S. military units headed for battle. Spokeswoman Victoria Clarke said Pentagon officials were pleased with the results of embedding about 700 journalists with troops in the Iraq war and would like to see the program expanded in future conflicts. ``I am quite confident that people feel so good about this process that they would want it to continue,'' Clarke said Tuesday at a discussion of Iraq war coverage at the Brookings Institution think tank....

They're in the Army Now Not Really By Karl Zinsmeister Posted: April 4, 2003 ARTICLES National Review Publication Date: April 21, 2003 The embedding effort in the current war is like nothing I've ever seen before. No corporation, no educational institution, no other government agency has ever invited me and other reporters into their war councils, let me read their secret memos, given me unfettered 24-hour access to their workplaces and workers. It's a tremendously brave gamble on the part of our Defense Department. In many ways, the gamble has paid off. Being shot at inevitably gives reporters fresh respect...

Fox News Channel's Ollie North reports from the front lines with fellow Marines. CNN's Walter Rodgers tells The Washington Post via satellite phone from inside Iraq, "I don't believe I've ever had such access over 36 years of reporting." ABC's Sam Donaldson calls the whole idea "a stroke of genius." Who's behind the strategy of "embedding" reporters inside coalition combat units? Bush administration insiders say it's the brainchild of Victoria "Torie" Clarke, the Pentagon's assistant secretary for public affairs. She developed the idea last fall in an effort to win the spin war. By early winter, she persuaded her boss,...

Nearly a dozen Republican lawmakers have demanded that the Pentagon defend its decision allow TV journalists to accompany U.S. combat units in Iraq, saying it may serve no other purpose than to advance the heated ratings war. Among those signing a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld raising questions about the plan to "embed" journalists with U.S. military forces was Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. With President Bush expected to order an attack on Iraq sometime Wednesday, TV news networks, too, are grappling with the issue of access, including how much they will...
