Good Catch Foods, the Pennsylvania-based startup which makes seafood out of plants, closed an $8.7 million Series A funding round yesterday. This ups their Series A from the $5.5 million the company announced in April. The round was led by New Crop Capital with participation from Stray Dog Capital, the PHW Group, Blue Horizon, and others. Founded in 2016, Good Catch Foods is developing plant-based alternatives to shredded tuna, crab cakes, and fish patties. They’re aiming to bring their fish-free tuna, which comes in three flavors and has roughly half the protein of “real” tuna, to market by 2019. According...

Hampton Creek, a plant-based food startup headquartered in San Francisco, recently announced that it will be moving into the lab-grown meat industry, and plans to have its clean meat products on shelves as soon as 2018. According to Spanish tech site ABC.es, Hampton Creek is considering using 3D printing to realize this goal. Since its founding in 2011 by Josh Balk and Joshua Tetrick (the company’s current CEO), Hampton Creek has gained a lot of attention for its plant-based food products—both good and bad. On the good side, the company has been recognized as a unicorn startup and has done...

The maker of meatless patties opens a large-scale production facility and plans to pump out 1 million pounds of faux meat every month. It's not easy to sink your teeth into one of Impossible Foods' lab-grown meatless hamburgers. After all, you can only get them at eight US restaurants. On Wednesday, though, the company said it will bring its Impossible Burger to 1,000 eateries by year's end. To make that happen, the firm is opening a factory the size of a city block. The goal is to make at least 1 million pounds of faux burger meat every month. "You...
  • Say Hello to Finger-Lickin’ Lab-Grown Chicken

Fried chicken will never be guilt-free. But you may soon be able to remove at least part of the remorse the next time you chow down—because it might not have required a single bird to be harmed. Memphis Meats is one of a cadre of startups racing to create meat that doesn’t involve killing any animals. The firm's approach to what it calls “clean meat” is to culture animal cells in the lab, feed them nutrients until they grow into pieces large enough to cook and eat. The company has already grown beef (as have others). Last year, it made...
  • Ted Cruz is crazy, like a fox

Hide your kids. Hide your wife. Because the presidential bid of Rafael Edward Cruz--whom you may know by his stage name, "Ted"--is most definitely picking up steam. The senator from Texas has been called a "charlatan" by Washington Post opinion writers and a "wacko bird" by Sen. John McCain. Although Cruz won't win any popularity contests in the Acela corridor, he has an excellent chance to win the Republican nomination. First of all, his campaign is raking in dough. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that he raised $20 million during the fourth fundraising quarter of 2015, which was...
