Sources told ABC News a backpack in Melaku's possession contained a package labeled ammonium nitrate as well as spent firearm ammunition. Ammonium nitrate, a common fertilizer, can be used in explosives. The FBI later said despite the label, the backpack presented no immediate threat. A search of Melaku's nearby car also found no potential devices. Law enforcement sources said Melaku does not appear to have known ties to any terror organization. In addition to his arrest today, Melaku already faces pending charges in Loudoun County, Virginia, for a rash of vehicle break-ins, police said.

A family of 12 asylum-seekers is being put up in a vast house costing taxpayers nearly £1,500 a week... The Ethiopian couple and their ten children are receiving a staggering £1,460 a week in housing benefit alone. The jobless couple will also be eligible for other handouts such as unemployment and child benefits, which could potentially add up to an additional £1,300 a week. Council officials, who refused to give further details of the case, found the family a mini mansion after they arrived in London from Africa in the past few weeks. It was not revealed whether the family...

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch...

Twenty-five Muslims burned down ten Christian homes, leaving eighty Christians homeless in Ethiopia...They also set fire to their barns, killing their animals and destroying their harvest... The attackers then prevented the victims from leaving the village for 16 days. Finally, one of the Christians managed to escape and report the attacks to district officials after walking for 16 hours. The police temporarily arrested the person who led the attack and a local official. However, they were later released on bail. The Muslims have prevented the Christians from rebuilding their homes and the Christians now live under trees. ONGOING PERSECUTION This...

Eritrea has a deserved reputation as an arms depot for various radical and rebel groups around the world. Sri Lanka's government has accused Eritrea of providing arms to the recently defeated LTTE rebels (who fought for over two decades to partition the island nation). Now an Eritrean dissident is accusing Eritrea of supplying rebels in Yemen with weapons and ammo. Sure, it is an accusation, but the charge likely has merit. Eritrea has made noises for several years that it could close access through the Red Sea, and having allies across the water in Yemen would make that act easier....

MOGADISHU (AFP) - An Ethiopian military convoy was ambushed in a new round of deadly violence in the Somali capital Mogadishu, hours after the African Union agreed to send peacekeepers to the war-torn country. At least one person was killed in the ambush Saturday, which triggered a major gunbattle in the volatile south of Mogadishu. Coming in the wake of a brazen attack late on Friday on the residence of the interim president, the AU stabilisation force should be under no illusions about the scale of the task that awaits it. The interim administration and peacekeepers not only face having...

Somali militia orders Ethiopians out MOGADISHU, Somalia, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The militia that controls much of Somalia has given Ethiopian troops until Tuesday to withdraw peacefully or face all-out war. But Ethiopia says its troops will not leave unless the Somali government explicitly rescinds its invitation allowing the troops in the country. Somali lawmakers in the nation's capital Mogadishu say parliament did not "invite" the Ethiopian troops. They say instead, some top Somali officials unilaterally invited Ethiopia to deploy ground troops into the country without parliament approval, Somalia's independent Garowe Online news service reports. Meanwhile, the parliament became fractured...

Call for jihad as Ethiopian troops go into Somalia By Mike Pflanz in Nairobi (Filed: 10/10/2006) Radical Muslims controlling much of southern Somalia yesterday declared jihad, or holy war, on Ethiopia after accusing its troops of capturing a town taken by the fundamentalists last month. The 750 Ethiopians were among forces loyal to the Somalia's weak, transitional president, Abdullahi Yusuf. They seized Buur Hakaba without firing a shot early yesterday. The Islamic Courts Union responded by stepping up their long-running threats to wage war with Ethiopia, which stands accused of sending thousands of troops into Somalia to defend Mr Yusuf's...

The works will probably never return to the museumLONDON. The British Museum has agreed to transfer its Ethiopian tabots (or holy tablets) to a church in London. Later this year the Ethiopians are expected to take over a redundant Anglican church, and a crypt or secure room will then be set aside to house the symbolically-charged wooden objects, which represent the Ark of the Covenant. The museum has agreed to a five-year extendible loan and the tabots may well never again return to the museum. The arrangement has the blessing of the Patriarch, Abba Paulos. As The Art Newspaper recently...
