President Trump marked a national observance on Wednesday for the millions victims who died as a result of international communism. "On the National Day for the Victims of Communism, we honor the memory of the more than 100 million people who have been killed and persecuted by communist totalitarian regimes," the president said in a White House statement. "We also reaffirm our steadfast support for those who strive for peace, prosperity, and freedom around the world." Communism, or Marxism-Leninism, is a political ideology whose adherents first seized power during the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. Often referred to by the...

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) plans to make a decision about which committee chairmanship he wants to hold next year after discussing the matter with his Senate colleagues next week, a spokesman for the senator said Wednesday. Grassley is currently the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. But with the retirement of Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), the Finance Committee chairmanship is open and Grassley has seniority on the panel. "Regarding Sen. Grassley’s chairmanship next Congress, Sen. Grassley will consult with his colleagues when the Senate returns next week and will then announce his decision," Grassley spokesman Michael Zona said. The Finance...

House Democrats have a Plan B to make sure Robert Mueller’s findings in the Russia investigation see the light of day if President Trump fires the special counsel, a report said. Democrats, who regained control of the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections, are preparing for a Saturday Night Massacre situation in which Trump fires top Justice Department officials in an attempt to quash Mueller’s investigation. In that scenario, Democratic officials told Politico, Mueller would be immediately summoned to Capitol Hill, where he would testify about his findings on national television.

**SNIP** “Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans, it’s about restoring the constitution’s checks and balances to the Trump administration,” Pelosi, 78, said at the election night party in Washington D.C. “It’s about stopping the GOP and Mike—Mitch—McConnell’s assaults on Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and the health care of 130 million Americans living with pre-existing medical conditions.” Then, raising her fist in the air, Pelosi declared: “Let’s hear it more for pre-existing medical conditions!”

A Norwegian warship was heavily damaged in a collision with a Maltese oil tanker in the North Sea off the coast of Norway. According to Norwegian media reports Thursday, the frigate is in danger of sinking after sustaining heavy damage. The oil tanker is reportedly undamaged. Several reports confirmed that all 137 crew on the navy ship were evacuated but seven have been treated for minor injuries. "The armed forces is now reviewing all the means available in the region to assist the KNM Helge Ingstad (the damaged warship)," Lieutenant Colonel Ivar Moen told AFP. According to the website Marine...

On Friday afternoon, with just a few hours before sundown and the start of the Sabbath, David Parvey hurried to a South Philadelphia gun shop called Firing Line to get his new 9-millimeter pistol. To Parvey, who attends an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Center City, it felt like the only rational response to the Oct. 27 mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 congregants were killed. "I legally have the right to at least be able to match evil with some sort of response, and in my mind I would be dumb not to," said...

**SNIP** So, what advice can our MPs offer their US counterparts? "Always believe in yourself," says Danielle Rowley, who was elected as MP for Midlothian last year, aged 27. "People will always have an idea of what politicians should be, and you're never going to fit into that, but they will believe in you for being you." Ms Rowley admits the advice is "dead cheesy" but stresses self-belief is hugely important in an often male-dominated arena. "The only skill you need is to be passionate about helping people and passionate about representing your area," she adds. "Everything else you can...

Congressional members say the declassification would expose extensive evidence of abuse by the FBI and FISC. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is “seriously” considering declassifying a slew of documents requested by former Republican House leaders investigating the FBI’s handling of the Russia probe. Trump was pummeled with questions during a rancorous White House press briefing where he congratulated Republicans for winning Senate races and said he hoped to work with the new Democratic House leadership. The president addressed questions regarding whether or not he would end Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, stating, “I could, I could fire everybody...

The United States and South Korea have resumed some military exercises just days ahead of a high-profile meeting focused on denuclearisation between US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials. About 500 South Korean and American marines will take part in the drills on Monday, according to Yonhap news, which were previously indefinitely suspended in June after Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore. Pyongyang often bristles at joint US-South Korean military exercises, claiming they are provocations directed at the North, and officials hoped the suspension would encourage talks. The manoeuvers, part of the Korean...

President Trump is “very seriously” considering whether to declassify a slew of FBI and Justice Department records related to the Russia investigation, he said Wednesday. That controversial proposal, which Trump has toyed with for months, may have a backer in Matthew Whitaker, the acting attorney general. “Declassification, we’re looking at very seriously,” Trump told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday, just before Attorney General Jeff Sessions was forced to resign. Whitaker, who served as Sessions’ chief of staff, will take over as acting attorney general. In that role, he will oversee the special counsel’s investigation into Trump associates’ links...

Not exactly sure what took so long on this but the White House has finally suspended the “hard pass” press credential for CNN narrative engineer Jim Acosta following his rude behavior and physical confrontation with a White House intern earlier today. Sarah Huckabee Sanders released the following statement: “President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable. It is also completely...

An Indonesian airliner was delayed for an hour after passengers complained of an overpowering stench released from a load of the notorious thorny fruit durian, according to reports. About 2 tons of the world’s stinkiest fruit was in the cargo hold of the Jakarta-bound Sriwijaya Air flight at Bengkulu in Sumatra, the BBC reported. Boyke Ledy Watra, a reporter with Indonesia’s Antara news agency who was aboard the fetid flight, said passengers began arguing with the crew — with some almost coming to blows with flight attendants. The airline eventually agreed to remove the offending fruit and the plane took...

The Trump administration today issued a new rule designed to protect Americans from being forced to pay for abortions under Obamacare. Today the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a new rule directing insurers selling Obamacare plans that cover elective abortion to collect a separate payment from enrollees for that coverage, as required by law. Under the Obama administration, insurers were allowed to collect these payments together in violation of clear statutory language. In 2018, taxpayer-funded Obamacare insurance plans in 24 states and the District of Columbia are allowed to cover elective abortion with an embedded abortion surcharge....

This year’s midterm elections are shaping up to be record-breaking for several reasons. More women have been elected to Congress than ever before, and voter turnout was at an all-time high. But it was also record-breaking for the sheer amount of money spent. The numbers are still being tallied, but according to the Center for Responsive Politics, we are on track for an election cost of more than $5 billion. As the dust settles and the final votes roll in, many are asking: was it worth it? The short answer is… it depends. Democrats spent $801 million to take back...

For nearly as long as FBI special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating Russian election meddling, activists have been planning mass protests. Hundreds of protests across the US, organized by MoveOn and other progressive groups, are planned to begin if Trump fires Mueller or deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who appointed him. They would also begin if the president prevents the investigation from being “conducted freely,” MoveOn says. Today, those fears may have been realized when Trump asked attorney general Jeff Sessions for his resignation. Sessions, who had recused himself from the investigation, will be replaced by Matt Whitaker, a...

Parliamentary bodies from five countries are now calling on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify about the problem of fake news on Facebook. And Zuckerberg is saying no to all of them. The concept of an international grand committee is unprecedented, but it underscores the concern over the effect of disinformation on free elections. Given Facebook’s role in the spread of fake news during the 2016 U.S. elections, many nations have pressured the company to discuss the steps it is taking to prevent future spreads.
