One of David Hockney's famous "pool paintings" is coming to auction and is expected to sell in the $80 million range, easily breaking the record for a work by a living artist sold at auction. The British artist's "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)," to be auctioned at Christie's in November, is considered one of his premier works. Christie's has estimated the work at about $80 million, but says it expects it to sell for more. Like a real-life version of a Looney Tunes cartoon, a visitor to a Portuguese museum was injured last week when he stepped into an art installation resembling an inky void. Currently on exhibit at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Descent Into Limbo by Anish Kapoor includes an actual eight-foot hole that’s painted black—so it appears to have no depth at all. Marilyn Monroe’s rear is getting some leers in Connecticut. A 26-foot statue of the iconic actress has been placed in a Stamford park across the street from a church, which is getting a full view of her behind. It depicts the famous scene from 1955’s “The Seven Year Itch” where Monroe holds down her white dress as air blows up from a subway grate. The back of the statue showing her underwear is clearly visible from the front of the First Congregational Church of Stamford.

An exhibition which has opened in New York takes the unlikely step of placing fake works of art on display. The Brooklyn Museum, like many others, began buying ancient Coptic and Pagan sculptures after World War II. However, the museum's curators recently discovered that roughly a third of their collection is fake.The resulting exhibition places genuine sculptures from the 4th Century AD alongside a small group of forgeries, probably from the mid-20th Century.Experts say there is no way of knowing exactly who carved the limestone fakes, though one theory suggests they may have been produced by prisoners-of-war in Egypt.
