  • Hoping to cut House losses, Dems try for firewall

    10/08/2010 3:52:29 PM PDT · by mandaladon · 22 replies
WASHINGTON – Struggling to build a firewall against a Republican takeover, congressional Democrats are pouring money into roughly two dozen tight races around the country in the campaign's closing weeks while pulling it back from others where their chances seem slimmer. With polls showing Republicans increasingly well-positioned to seize control of the House, the Democrats are planning TV ad blitzes to shore up their best-positioned incumbents and a handful of challengers in races they believe they can still win.

If the people are dissatisfied with the leadership of their government should the government fight to thwart the will of the people? If the legitimate source of authority of the government is the people (and it is) then any action that the government would take to foil the people’s will should be seen as inappropriately seditious. Therefore, any talk of a “firewall” by Democrats or any actions by Democrats to use a collective pool of money, government or private, to fight against the people, interferes with the natural normal working of the election process. Does anybody know of a firewall program that will allow blocking direct access to a site (youtube in my case) while still allowing another page to bring in content from that site? I am trying to block youtube while allowing an educational site that has specific embedded youtube videos as lecture material. With McAfee, I can block youtube, but then the embedded video lectures aren't loaded at the educational site.

Just bought a new computer and I'm looking for the best firewall that will protect me. I used Armor with my old XP system and it seemed to work well, yet all the store gurus seem to think that the built in Windows firewall is just the "best". Any ideas?

The great Australian Firewall might be struggling to make political progress, but regulators are already using its blacklist to threaten local websites with fines. Broadband discussion forum Whirlpool was threatened with an A$11,000 (£5,148) a day fine by the Australian Communications and Media Authority because a commenter posted a link to an anti-abortion website which appeared on the regulator's list of websites banned in Australia. The takedown notice was sent to Whirlpool's hosting service Bulletproof Networks. Bulletproof contacted Whirlpool which agreed to remove the web link. But the story gets murkier - ACMA added the website to its secret blacklist...

"What is PIFTS.exe?" or How Symantec Turned A Simple Mistake Into Corporate Disaster.First posted: March 9, 2009Updated: March 10, 2009 On March 9, 2009, Norton Internet Security users around the world encountered a suspicious message which indicated that an unsigned program, PIFTS.exe, was trying to connect to the Internet. Users quickly turned to Google where they only found other users looking for the same answers. Next they began posting questions on the official Norton Internet Security message board. Here is where the situation quickly deteriorated. Forum moderators began pulling every single post which mentioned PIFTS or merely alluded to...

The Australian government is already planning to block legal internet content when its "great firewall" eventually goes live. That is the fear expressed by some of the most trenchant critics of this scheme, including Senators Simon Birmingham (for the Liberal Party) and Scott Ludlam (for the Greens) following another shift in emphasis by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy in evidence to the Environment, Communications and the Arts committee on Monday. The Australian government launched a trial of its filtering software on 11 February, in association with a number of ISPs, including Primus, Tech 2U, Webshield, OMNIconnect, Netforce and Highway 1. The...

Hello all. I recently purchased a Cisco ASA-5510(Adaptive Security Appliance) to handle all of our Site To Site and Remote Access VPN connections at work. Barack Obama got in some hot water in Nevada for making a mildly positive reference to Ronald Reagan, but he wants to win the nomination in part by emulating one of Reagan's most well-known feats. Rather than publicly demand the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, though, Obama has set himself the task of tearing down Hillary Clinton's last and most significant firewall -- the superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention: Bill Richardson's phone has been ringing off the hook. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called Sunday night, followed by her husband, and then Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell, a Clinton backer....

Mitt Romney needs a win in the primaries soon, despite all of the rhetoric about delegate counts and second-place credibility. The Romney team apparently understands that, and have begun focusing their advertising on the upcoming Michigan primary -- and have put off other ad buys for the moment. The AP reports this as a sign of trouble: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has decided to pull his advertising from South Carolina and Florida, in a sign of trouble for a campaign that badly needs a win. Romney had been hoping to challenge John McCain and Mike Huckabee in South Carolina,...

I currently have Norton as a firewall and the subscription runs out in 3 days. I will not be renewing it. I have downloaded a program called Comodo Firewall Pro but have not run the install yet. Comodo is a free and completely functional version of the product. I will also want to install the free version of AVG. I also run Spybot Search & Destroy regularly. My OS is Win XP. I have a couple of questions: 1. Can I run AVG with a firewall that also includes virus protection? 2. How do I completely delete the Norton product?...

One asymmetric threat to our military forces and the nation is "cyber terrorism." Our advanced technologically based military forces — dependent on our satellites, critical infrastructure computers, the Internet, secure software programming, computer-driven telecommunications, air traffic control centers and other sophisticated sensor systems — are tempting targets for cyber terrorism. Not only do we use our satellite and communication technology to support our military forces, but it has also become a key link in all aspects of our complex economic society. Banking, control of electrical grids, stock markets, telecommunications and a vast array of computer networks are part of our...

TMZ has obtained an audio tape of O.J. Simpson's confrontation with a sports memorabilia dealer that led to his arrest on felony robbery charges. In it, you hear someone say, "You against the motherf*****g wall." The tape was recorded by Thomas Riccio, who co-owns the auction house Universal Rarities. Riccio met up with Simpson just before the confrontation at the Palace Station Casino on Thursday night. We're told Riccio was on hand to help Simpson prove certain memorabilia being auctioned by Alfred Beardsley was ill-gotten. Riccio says he believed Simpson was going to confront Beardsley in the hotel room to...
