This is a video of Bascom Lamar Lunsford (fiddle and vocals) and three other musicians (guitar and banjo) singing a song called "Doggett Gap" recorded in Ashville, North Carolina on October 7th, 1928. "Doggett Gap" seems very similar to the more famous "Cumberland Gap", so it could simply be a variation of Cumberland Gap with an alternate title. • Tommy Jarrell: Cumberland Gap (1983)

WASHINGTON: The musket blast was sudden and deadly, the killing nearly 500 years ago of what may have been the first gunshot victim in the Western Hemisphere. "We didn't expect it. We saw this skull and saw the almost round hole and thought people must have been shooting around here recently," said Guillermo Cock, an archaeologist who found the remains near Lima, Peru. But he realised that the skull was ancient, and a recent bullet strike would simply have shattered it, Cock said. The skull was found among a large group of bones of ancient Incas, who had died violently...

SEATTLE (AP) - Make that an iced coffee. While the Northeast was bidding farewell to unseasonably chilly temperatures, Seattle residents dusted off the sunscreen and shorts Friday as the National Weather Service issued its first-ever heat advisory for the city. The advisory covering the urban corridor from Tacoma north to Everett was prompted by a second day of record temperatures. Thursday's high temperature of 89 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport broke a 58-year-old record. A high of 87 was forecast for Friday. Phyllis Cameron, 92, planned to keep cool with lots of iced tea and a few gin-and-tonics. "I'm just...

Congrats to the Rice Owls, who continued this year's tradition of Texas teams ousting California ones in unfrozen sports. Rice U.(of Houston) defeats Stanford 14-2, the most lopsided championship game in CWS history, winning the series 2-1. Coach Wayne Graham can add the division I crown to his numerous titles his team earned at San Jacinto Junior College(also in Texas). And best of all, Rice EARNED their national title on the field, marching through the playoffs, no bogus mythical title from a sham 1-game matchup setup by computer geeks, AD water boys, and loser sports writers. Champs, without dispute or...
