  • Eating one fish from U.S. lakes or rivers likened to drinking month's worth of contaminated water

Eating one freshwater fish caught in a river or lake in the United States is the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals," new research said on Tuesday. The invisible chemicals, called PFAS, were first developed in the 1940s to resist water and heat and are now used in items such as non-stick pans, textiles, fire suppression foams and food packaging. But the indestructibility of PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, means the pollutants have built up over time in the air, soil, lakes, rivers, food, drinking water and even our bodies. David Andrews, a...
  • City in China orders fish swabbed for Covid

    08/19/2022 8:23:18 AM PDT · by algore · 24 replies
In the coastal Chinese city of Xiamen, it’s not just the mouths of fishers being swabbed for Covid-19, but also the fish they’ve caught. As China maintains its commitment to zero Covid, city authorities are working to ensure there is no avenue for the virus to enter, ordering all fishers and their catch undergo a daily nucleic acid test. According to the Xiamen Jimei district’s political and legal committee, it was necessary to swab both returning workers and their “materials” immediately upon disembarking each day, because some fishers had made illegal trades or contact with overseas vessels while at sea,...

During the 2019 American Portrait Gala, she sported a yellow dress topped with a sparkling corset-style overlay. Obama also stunned with soft sultry wavy hair to complete the look. She wore it to present Lin-Manuel Miranda with the Portrait of a Nation Prize, and posted a photo of them together on Instagram. Trump: US is 'Locked and Loaded' to Respond to Saudi Oil Attack By Steve Herman September 15, 2019 U.S. President Donald Trump says American forces are 'locked and loaded' to respond to the fiery attacks on one of Saudi Arabia's largest oil fields and the world's biggest crude oil stabilization facility. "There is reason to believe we know the culprit," Trump tweeted late Sunday. He added he is waiting to hear from the Saudis as to who they believe is behind the attack and "under what terms we would proceed." Earlier, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had tweeted that "Iran...

BALTIMORE, MD — When a man broke into the building in the middle of the night where U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings and his wife live, the couple did not call 911 right away. After the intruder got in, they took action. Hours later, the congressman's wife, Maya Rockeymoore, contacted authorities. Two exterior doors lead to the residential part of the apartment building where the couple lives on the first and second floor in the 2000 block of Madison Avenue, according to the police report. Around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, they were alerted by a cell phone application connected...

The President and the head of the Democrat Party, Nancy Pelosi, are arguing extensively over allowing immigrants into our country. Nancy of course wants free access to everyone who wants to come in, while Donald wants us to secure our borders and insure only the right people come in. Instead of going to a costly, time-consuming nationwide vote on the matter, they agree to a 3-day ice fishing contest to settle the issue. Whoever catches the most fish at the end of the 3 days will have his or her process implemented. The two decide that a remote frozen lake...

The European Parliament has voted for a complete ban on a range of single-use plastics across the union in a bid to stop pollution of the oceans. MEPs backed a ban on plastic cutlery and plates, cotton buds, straws, drink-stirrers and balloon sticks. The proposal also calls for a reduction in single-use plastic for food and drink containers like plastic cups. One MEP said, if no action was taken, "by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans". The UK will have to incorporate the rules into national law if the ban becomes a fully-fledged directive before...

When I first posted this story, I said it smelled fishy. Now it positively stinks. Does this look like a clock to you? And now the plot thickens. In what has become one of the most egregious of the faked hate narratives, the bomb hoax clockster has a family with a history of supremacist stunts. “One of the earliest instances of the standout citizen making national news was in 2011, when he sensationally stood up to an anti-Islamic...
  • Climate Change: Fish Will Move Toward Poles, Affecting Poor Nations More

    Nature World News ^ | February 27, 2016 | By Catherine Arnold
As fish go toward the Earth's poles as a result of climate change, fishermen in poorer countries will disproportionately feel the impact - putting a strain on worldwide wealth resources, says a new study. The report from researchers at Rutgers, Princeton, Yale and Arizona State University was recently published in the journal Nature Climate Change. It includes findings that warming temperatures will disperse fish away from the equator, bringing about a "mass redistribution of wealth." The team looked at data on fish migration, employing a mathematical formula to learn how their movement would affect developing nations' economies. "What we find...

A commission established to review homicides in Baltimore has stalled because its leaders say the city's top prosecutor isn't sharing information that's needed for the program to work. The city spent nearly $200,000 last year to launch the Homicide Review Commission. It was meant to bring together elected officials, police leaders, academics, public health officials and others to identify trends that leads to slayings and how best to respond. Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, was tapped to lead the project. He tells The Baltimore Sun (http://tinyurl.com/pehu9nb) that State Attorney Marilyn Mosby's refusal...

We never expected to know this much about Naya Rivera's hygiene habits. The 28-year-old Glee star, who celebrated her birthday on Monday, was a guest host on The View this morning where the songstress shared a rather, um, interesting theory about showering. After moderator Nicolle Wallace defended the fact that she showers three times a day (pre- and post-show, plus once before bed), the Fox beauty chimed in with a headline-making hypothesis. "I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnic," Rivera said as Wallace couldn't help but burst out into a fit of giggles. "I feel like...

A Wisconsin man told a sheriff's deputy he had not been drinking, but rather eating beer-battered fish when he was pulled over for what could be his 10th drunken driving offense, according to an incident report released on Wednesday. John Przybyla, 73, was stopped for a broken tail light and erratic driving on Oct. 12 by a deputy who then smelled alcohol on his breath and saw that his eyes were blood shot. The deputy asked Przybyla how much he had had to drink. Przybyla replied that he had not been drinking and instead had eaten beer-battered fish at a...

Intruder scared away by Big Mouth Billy Bass Score one for the fish. The crime scene of a break-in at a Rochester's Hooked on Fishing shop showed evidence that a burglar got scared off by a motion-activated, singing bass, authorities said. The novelty bass, which had been hung near the door and would start singing "Take Me to the River" whenever someone entered the shop, was found on the floor after the intruder knocked it down as part of breaking the door to get in, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office. But the intruder appeared to have left in...

From ORB LAB's FB page: Shark fishing season has officially begun for the ORB LAB. Last Friday, a crew struck out to try and recapture sharks carrying tags containing valuable information about the species assemblage encountered by these coastal apex predators. We caught one large female on our first line Friday, but we were not expecting to catch her like this! This unlucky smooth dogfish couldn't resist the menhaden used as bait and unfortunately fell victim to one of the top predators in the bay. The dogfish was about 3 feet long and completely swallowed by the sand tiger shark.

No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Mermaids — those half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea — are legendary sea creatures chronicled in maritime cultures since time immemorial. The ancient Greek epic poet Homer wrote of them in The Odyssey. In the ancient Far East, mermaids were the wives of powerful sea-dragons, and served as trusted messengers between their spouses and the emperors on land. The aboriginal people of Australia call mermaids yawkyawks – a name that may refer to their mesmerizing songs. The belief in mermaids may have arisen at the very dawn of our species. Magical...

PROSPECT HARBOR, Maine – The intensely fishy smell of sardines has been the smell of money for generations of workers in Maine who have snipped, sliced and packed small, silvery fish into billions of cans on their way to Americans' lunch buckets and kitchen cabinets. For the past 135 years, sardine canneries have been as much a part of Maine's small coastal villages as the thick Down East fog. It's been estimated that more than 400 canneries have come and gone along the state's long, jagged coast. The lone survivor, the Stinson Seafood plant here in this eastern Maine shoreside...
