German is coming. English may be the European Union’s lingua franca, but listen carefully in the corridors of power and you’ll find the language of Goethe and Schiller is on the rise. German is gaining ground among the EU’s three official working languages as Berlin prepares to take on the bloc’s presidency next month. That’s not least because native speakers occupy top positions, including Ursula von der Leyen at the Spitze of the European Commission. Those in the Brussels bubble are taking note. The Goethe Institute, Germany’s state-funded cultural outpost, told POLITICO it saw a five-fold increase in demand for...

How many other languages are being signed by other foreign nationals to pump up the signature count? — Swordmaker) Am 19. Dezember werden...

The shift in European attitudes toward the flood of largely Muslim immigrants seeking new homes continues this week. After months of insisting on an open door, humanitarian policy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is once again revising her position and bowing to pressure from her citizens. The latest move on the part of the government is to insist that there will be no free riders on the welfare state train, and any new arrivals seeking to make Germany their home are going to have to start acting a bit more like Germans. This will include learning to speak the language...

SNIPPET: "I. When considering the matter of jihadis online, remember that most of what we think we know is based on analyses of the comments made by an handful of vocal activists. The vast majority of jihadis online, be they on forums or social networking sites[i], say nothing." SNIPPET: "The real challenge is threat assessment." SNIPPET: "V. These are questions I ask about any jihadi online: • Where are they? • Who do they know? • What have they downloaded? • What have they uploaded? • What communities have they joined? • What sites are they involved in operating? The [PWP] notation indicates the site is password protected. There's nothing worse than the mournful wailing of analysts, graduate students, and reporters who find themselves locked out of their favorite forum. SNIPPET: "Signed by “your brothers of the German Taliban Mujahideen”, the document has two parts." SNIPPET: "As a whole, the text provides a German-language assessment and justification for suicide missions." Can someone help me out here? There's a German term that describes the occurrence of things in their time. This is NOT to be confused with "Zeitgeist", which describes a collective mindset or "spirit" of the times, for example certain political movements, but THINGS. For example Volkswagens, Zeppelins, Telephones, Internet, etc. THINGS that occur at their appointed place in time.
