The Girl Scouts of the United States of America filed a lawsuit on Tuesday seeking to stop the Boy Scouts of America from rebranding its Boy Scouts program and referring to members simply as "Scouts." Bloomberg reported that the Girl Scouts alleged in a trademark lawsuit that the Boy Scouts of America will "marginalize" the female organization and "erode its core brand identity" by adopting the "scouts" moniker. The Boy Scouts of America announced last year it would allow girls to join the organization and in May, revealed its plans to rebrand the Boy Scouts program as "Scouts BSA." In...

At least one Girl Scout Troop in Salt Lake City is now accepting boys. The troop meets every Monday at the Utah Pride Center and is open to boys who identify as girls. Their first meeting yesterday included five girls between the ages of six and ten, but no boys yet. Shiela Raboy with the Pride Center says she’s proud to host the first Girl Scout Troop in Utah that welcomes anyone grappling with gender identity.

Can banning one school-yard word really change the world? Sheryl Sandberg says yes. Sandberg -- the chief operating officer of Facebook and author of the best-selling book "Lean In" -- is spearheading the launch of a campaign today to ban the word "bossy," arguing the negative put-down stops girls from pursuing leadership roles. "We know that by middle school, more boys than girls want to lead," Sandberg said, "and if you ask girls why they don't want to lead, whether it's the school project all the way on to running for office, they don't want to be called bossy, and...

Three weeks ago, my mother brought me two small jewelry boxes from home filled with “treasures” from my childhood.  The necklaces, bracelets and pins brought back memories.  There were two ballerinas, one cross, and one butterfly necklace.  Included in the treasures were my Brownie and my Girl Scout pins, still in one piece and working, if a little dull and tarnished.  That same week, my eight year old daughter told me, “Mommy, I want to be a Brownie.”  It seemed like such a simple request.  After all, there are a few Brownie troops in the school, certainly I could just...

A pro-family group is concerned about an alliance between the nation's largest provider of abortions and the Girl Scouts. The controversy surrounds the Waco, Texas Girl Scouts organization, which has given its approval to a sex education pamphlet distributed by Planned Parenthood to children as young as 10 years old. "Parents have every right to be troubled by an alliance of the Girl Scouts and an organization like Planned Parenthood," said Family Research Council Vice President for Communications Genevieve Wood. "They may see themselves as a 'health organization,' but parents know exactly what Planned Parenthood is, and no amount of...

Web posted Monday, December 22, 2003 Peninsula trappers giving pelts to scouts By JOSEPH ROBERTIA Peninsula Clarion Last month, Girls Scouts from Fairbanks made national news after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) cried foul over the troops trapping of beavers. But some local trappers have banded together to show their support for the scouts' project. The Kenai Peninsula Trapper's Association (KPTA) has agreed to donate several furs to Girl Scout Troop 34. "We thought it would be a good thing to do," said KPTA member and 14-year trapping veteran Roy Smith. "We wanted to ensure...

A group of high school students from Gary, Indiana is suing the Girl Scouts for not admitting teenage boys to a local troop. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis Tuesday, asks the court to allow five boys, ages 15 and 16, to join a local Girl Scout troop and to find the organization's membership policies discriminatory, calling the girls-only policy "one that arbitrarily, capriciously and unconstitutionally excludes persons based solely on a personal characteristic - their sex." About 2.8 million girls between the ages of five and 17 belong to the Girl Scouts and its associated organizations,...
