In his book "Progressive Democracy" (1914), Herbert Croly wrote the following: (page 29) As in the case of every great political edifice, the materials composing the American system are derived from many different sources, and are characterized by unequal values, both as to endurance and as to latent possibilities. The appearance of definiteness and finality which it derives from its embodiment in specific constitutional documents and other authoritative words is to a large extent illusory. Its real origin and meaning are very much more doubtful and complex than these words intimate. Historians are no more agreed as to the former...

Bender, a Zanesville, Ohio native, is in declining health — including hip bursitis — making playing the game difficult. "I'd come close to some hole-in-ones, but this one was level on the green before it curved towards the hole and went in," Bender told the newspaper. "I was in awe watching it. I played a few more holes, but my hips...

The club offered to refund their memberships and then called 911.

The story of five black women who were asked to leave a York County golf course for reportedly playing too slowly is making headlines and causing outrage across the country. The group of regular golfers said they were confronted at the second hole by Steve Chronister, one of the owners of the Grandview Golf Course and a former county commissioner, who accused them of lagging and offered to refund their money if they would leave. They were the only African Americans or all-female groups on the course in Dover Township, according to Sandra Thompson, who posted a detailed account of...

Patrick Reed had two putts for par, two putts on the 18th green, two putts to win the Masters. He was sitting at 15-under, he had held Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and everyone else off for going on three days. He was 24 feet away with an opportunity to lag it, then tap it, then slip on a green jacket. The throng around the 18th here at Augusta National sat politely but when his first putt slipped by the hole leaving him a slightly tricky 4-footer, they began a murmur that built into a consensus, not of dread that he...

hen Tiger Woods knocked one into the water at Amen Corner for the second day in a row, he headed off toward the Nelson Bridge while his two playing partners took a more familiar route to the 12th green over the Hogan Bridge. In a sense, those divergent paths were the perfect analogy for where Woods is at this stage of his career. He might add another major title to his amazing record. Maybe even two. But he's not catching Jack Nicklaus, and his days of dominating on the PGA Tour are done.

(snip) -- Tony Finau said his opening round 68 was a “miracle” given the pain from a nasty injury …….. during the par-3 contest. But just getting here was an improbable, inspiring story. Tony Finau turned down the one invite every golfer, from the best pros to high handicap scrubs, covets the most. He took a pass on playing Augusta National. “I’ve had opportunities to play Augusta, whether it be from a caddie, a member, to go watch as a kid,” he told me. “I’ve had opportunities to step foot on the grounds and play Augusta and watch the Masters....

With the Masters starting in just three weeks, the oddsmakers favorite to win the green jacket is now Tiger Woods. These odds are for the 2018 Masters, to be clear. The move into solo position with the lowest odds for Augusta came on Thursday morning. Woods went out with a 3-under 33 on the course’s back nine, his best opening nine score at this event since 2007.

President Donald Trump has now spent almost one-third of his time in office at his own properties and has played more golf than President Obama over the same period. The president has visited one of his properties on 112 days of his presidency, according to a count NBC News updated Wednesday in the midst of Trump's 10-day Christmas vacation at Mar-a-Lago—his private club in Palm Beach. JUST A THOUGHT. PEOPLE WHO PLAY A GAME ARE MORE ETHICAL THAN GAMES PEOPLE PLAY. FOR INSTANCE, A GOLFER MAY TAP A PUTT AND MOVE THE BALL AN INCH. NO ONE NOTICED, NOT AN OFFICAL, NOT A FAN, NOT A FELLOW PLAYER. YET THE PLAYER STANDS UP AND ANNOUNCES THAT HE MADE A STROKE. IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO PLAY BY THE RULES THEN WORRY ABOUT WHO WILL WIN. THE PLAYER HAS ALREADY WON BECAUSE HE WAS HONEST. THE ANSWER IS NOT TO HAVE MORE JUDGES OR MORE CAMERAS ON THE BALL. THE ANSWER IS TO HAVE MORE PLAYERS WITH...
