WASHINGTON (AP) — Seventy-year-old Cassandra Gentry is looking forward to a hefty cost-of-living increase in her Social Security benefits — not for herself but to pay for haircuts for her two grandchildren and put food on the table. The three live in a Washington apartment building that houses 50 “grandfamilies” — where grandparents take care of children who do not have parents present. Gentry, who took in her grandkids to keep them in a safe environment, says the boost in benefits will help her make ends meet. “I never thought about contributing to Social Security when I was working, but...

As violent crime increases in Minneapolis, community activists are getting creative to keep guns out of the hands of young people. Faded Barbershop located in Uptown is sending out a clear message to the community to stop the violence in Minneapolis. They’re hoping to make a difference one haircut at a time. “Trying to do something good for the community to let them know that there’s some good that can happen in our city,” Edward Davis, Faded Barbershop owner, said. If you sit in Davis’ chair at the Faded Barbershop, you get a package deal: a haircut and conversation. “How...
  • As COVID-19 death toll mounts, Nancy Pelosi’s salon hypocrisy hands Trump a deadly weapon

The name “Pelosi” has roots in the Latin word “pilus,” meaning “hair.” So perhaps it’s somewhat poetic that, in this foulest of years, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi finds herself tangled up in a ridiculous scandal involving an illicit salon appointment. Pelosi breezed into San Francisco’s eSalon for a wash and blow-dry last Monday despite the fact that, as everyone else in that city knows, public health rules ban indoor salon services in the middle of this deadly coronavirus pandemic. Security camera footage leaked to Fox News showed a wet-headed Pelosi walking through the establishment unmasked. Read more here: https://www.modbee.com/opinion/article245478630.html#storylink=cpy

A trip to a San Francisco salon has turned into a controversy for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi whose office tells KTVU she didn't think she did anything wrong by getting her hair done indoors on Monday . Security footage, reported on FOX News, showed Pelosi with wet hair and without a mask inside of eSalon in apparent defiance of COVID-19 rules. In San Francisco, face coverings are mandatory in most public settings. Salons may only cut hair outdoors under new rules that took effect today. “The Speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements. This business offered...

EXCLUSIVE: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited a San Francisco hair salon on Monday afternoon for a wash and blow-out, despite local ordinances keeping salons closed amid the coronavirus pandemic, Fox News had learned. In security footage obtained by Fox News, and timestamped Monday at 3:08 p.m. Pacific Time, the California powerhouse is seen walking through eSalon in San Francisco with wet hair, and without a mask over her mouth or nose. The stylist doing her hair can be seen following her wearing a black face mask. Salons in San Francisco had been closed since March and were only notified they...

  • Why Did Japanese Men During WWII All Have Such Horrible Buzzcut Haircuts?

I was watching yet another WWII documentary about Japan during WWII this weekend and then it hit me... All and I mean, ALL, Japanese men (and most boys) during that era all had the same exact same buzzcut haircut that looked terrible. Yeah, military recruits in the U.S.A. get that same haircut in bootcamp but most let it grow out later at least on top. Yet Japanese men ALL had that same lousy buzzcut all the time. Perhaps the only Japanese man not to have that buzzcut was the Emperor. So what was the reason? Was it conformity? Was there...

This is Merlin the cat modeling the dragon haircut he got courtesy of the Main Lion Cat Grooming Salon in Bumf*ck Paoli, Pennsylvania (it's behind the Starbucks on Plank Ave). I'm not sure how much the dragon cut costs, but their lion cuts go for $65, so probably somewhere around there. That might sound expensive, but if you live in Paoli, Pennsylvania, I imagine there's literally nothing else to spend your money on except saving up to move you and your cat the hell out of there.

You've heard of The Cat in the Hat but the latest fashion craze for animal owners is to turn their pets into something more predatory. Cats and dogs are now sporting new designs in their fur to make them more king of the jungle rather than domesticated house pet. However, one poor ginger feline looks genuinely embarrassed by her new look after its owner rouged-up its cheeks with make-up. We've all had a haircut we didn't ask for but would you subject your pet to some of these styles?

By now you've probably heard: Short haircuts are happening. Everywhere. From the September Vogue Paris cover, to Coco Rocha's Instagram in real time, to Rihanna, who went short a few weeks ago. And if there are other life forms out there in the universe, I’m sure even they have heard about Beyoncé’s pixie cut, polled their colonies for their citizens’ opinions, and put forth multiple theories about why she did it. But as a short-haired woman for the past two years, I’ve been watching the pixie hysteria unfold with some level of bemusement. I was never that comfortable with long...

Being a beer drinker, and never having cashed in a Budweiser to pay for a fill-up at the local gas station, I said to myself “Man, that must be really good stuff!” Even in a financial meltdown I thought, you could use it in place of cash, diamonds, gold or Bitcoins! Why It's Actually A Big Deal That Greek Bond Haircuts Talks Have Been Suspended Simone Foxman Oct. 26, 2011, 9:53 AM Talks on the losses private Greek bondholders will take are deadlocked and have been suspended. This news just hit the wires from Bloomberg. So far, U.S. markets don't seem to care. However, this could be a big deal, for two reasons: - Debt sustainability in Greece is virtually impossible without significant writedowns of sovereign debt. The numbers are just too big to allow for anything else. More private sector involvement (perhaps coupled with public sector involvement) is seen as...
  • Giving one's self a haircut (vanity)

Hello FRiends. Lately I've noticed that whenever I have a question about something, my first impulse is to look it up on FR. Anyway, that explains this vanity. Do any FReepers (guys) have experience giving themselves a haircut? My hair grows faster'n a weed and I don't care to waste time and money constantly running to the barber. Plus my hair is thick, coarse, and wavy, so once it gets even moderately long I end up looking either like the 'Hall' in Hall and Oates, or else a 1950's greaser. Not pretty. I have an electric clipper with a few...

I sat forlorn in a discount haircut franchise watching as my hair fell to the floor whilst what remaining on my head began looking similar to unwanted patches of crab grass in my lawn. Why was I paying money for a haircut I could from a chance encounter between my head and the weed whacker in my garage?

The leading party in Ireland's national election campaign wants to spread the pain from the nation's bank collapse to investors in bank bonds. There has been much talk in the campaign leading up to Friday's national election about renegotiating the massive European Union/IMF bailout and of "burning" senior bondholders and subjecting their investments to sharp discounts. There are widespread doubts whether Enda Kenny, leader of the opinion poll-leading Fine Gael party, can go further. The European Commission is opposed, and investment ratings agencies have fired warning shots by further downgrading Irish bank bonds this month. Kenny says he thinks it...

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - A governor in northern Saudi Arabia has ordered authorities to punish men who flirt with women in public places by cutting their hair, local media said Tuesday. Prince Fahd bin Badr, governor of the northern al-Jof region, ordered police to carry out the punishment after seeing a group of men with long hair pestering female students as they left school in the northern al-Qurayat province, Al-Hayat newspaper said. It said the prince told a gathering at his palace in the northern town of Skaka on Sunday he has instructed police to apply the punishment to all...

For four decades, Joseph Torrenueva has cut the hair of Hollywood celebrities, from Marlon Brando to Bob Barker, so when a friend told him in 2003 that a presidential candidate needed grooming advice, he agreed to help. The Beverly Hills hairstylist, a Democrat, said he hit it off with then-Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina at a meeting in Los Angeles that brought several fashion experts together to advise the candidate on his appearance. Since then, Torrenueva has cut Edwards's hair at least 16 times. At first, the haircuts were free. But because Torrenueva often had to fly somewhere on...

John Edwards said he’s embarrassed about his now famous $400 haircut. Campaign finance records show that Edwards’ campaign paid a Beverly Hills stylist $400 for his haircuts. Those pricey snips have undercut Edwards’ image as a populist crusading for the little guy. “It’s a ridiculous amount of money for a haircut,” Edwards told reporters after a campaign stop on Adel’s town square. “I’m actually embarrassed by it. “This guy had to come to where I was to get a haircut. I knew it’d be expensive. I didn’t know it would be that expensive. Hopefully I’ll have enough sense not to...
