Haverford College on Tuesday joined a growing list of schools to lose commencement speakers to protests from the left, when Robert J. Birgeneau, a former chancellor at the University of California, Berkeley, withdrew from this weekend’s event. First, lets describe the health care problems we have in Pennsylvania. Perhaps the most alarming fact is that Pennsylvania is losing 1,500 doctors each year due to the skyrocketing cost of malpractice insurance premiums. One local family doctor, who had never been sued, related how his premium went from $75,000 per year to $150,000 per year in one jump. His premium would be $12,000 if his practice were in Virginia. The next issue is the closure of hospitals. In the 166th District, our only hospital - Mercy Haverford - closed its doors in 2002, and has not reopened.

As a former Secretary of Education in Pennsylvania who now has a leading role in helping states implement No Child Left Behind, I was dismayed to read in your paper that residents of Haverford are being told No Child Left Behind is "the most anti-public school legislation that's ever been passed."

The Haverford Zoning Hearing Board, by a 4-1 vote approved the variance for a 3-foot front-yard encroachment of the new house at 754 Lawson Ave., April 3. The dissenting vote came from zoner Steve D'Emilio, a United Republicans for Haverford Township candidate for 1st Ward Commissioner. He said he would rather see the builder, John J. She said that years ago, she and her children would sleep out in the back yard listening to the sounds of nature.
