A Haverford College student who used a campus computer to attempt to hack into an IRS database to obtain Donald Trump’s tax returns days before the 2016 presidential election pleaded guilty Tuesday to two misdemeanor crimes in federal court. Justin Hiemstra, 22, who finished his studies in May but will not get his degree until he completes a study-abroad program next May, told Judge Cynthia Rufe that he did not know what he would have done with the tax returns if he and classmate Andrew Harris had succeeded in obtaining them on Nov. 2, 2016. “It was a time when...

Apparently three Philadelphia-area schools have decided they can't wait until Labor Day to start molding and shaping the young minds attached to the students who enroll there. Swarthmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr got together to offer a “Tri-College Identity, Equity, and Social Justice Summer Institute.” As Swarthmore's pr department explains in a press release: "The Tri-College Identity, Equity and Social Justice Summer Institute is designed to help students enhance both their leadership skills and their individual/group identity issues within the context of exploring issues of gender, race, sexuality, socio-economic class, spirituality, power, and privilege. To this end, intensive workshops on...

Haverford College on Tuesday joined a growing list of schools to lose commencement speakers to protests from the left, when Robert J. Birgeneau, a former chancellor at the University of California, Berkeley, withdrew from this weekend’s event. Some students and faculty members at Haverford, a liberal arts college near Philadelphia, objected to the invitation to Mr. Birgeneau to speak and receive an honorary degree because, under him, the University of California police used batons to break up an Occupy protest in 2011. He first stated his support for the police, and then a few days later, saying that he was...

“Trust, concern and respect” are the key words in Haverford College’s honor code. This weekend at least some Haverford students who care about Israel weren’t feeling as if any of those terms applied to them. There was an event at Haverford College on Sunday, Nov. 24, called “The Soldier and the Refusenik.” The two speakers who presented are traveling throughout the U.S. on a fundraising tour for their organization, Anarchists Against the Wall. That organization attacks not only the “Occupation,” but Israel’s very existence. And perhaps worst of all, the Haverford Center for Peace and Global Citizenship was not only...

First, lets describe the health care problems we have in Pennsylvania. Perhaps the most alarming fact is that Pennsylvania is losing 1,500 doctors each year due to the skyrocketing cost of malpractice insurance premiums. One local family doctor, who had never been sued, related how his premium went from $75,000 per year to $150,000 per year in one jump. His premium would be $12,000 if his practice were in Virginia. The next issue is the closure of hospitals. In the 166th District, our only hospital - Mercy Haverford - closed its doors in 2002, and has not reopened.

As a former Secretary of Education in Pennsylvania who now has a leading role in helping states implement No Child Left Behind, I was dismayed to read in your paper that residents of Haverford are being told No Child Left Behind is "the most anti-public school legislation that's ever been passed."

The Haverford Zoning Hearing Board, by a 4-1 vote approved the variance for a 3-foot front-yard encroachment of the new house at 754 Lawson Ave., April 3. The dissenting vote came from zoner Steve D'Emilio, a United Republicans for Haverford Township candidate for 1st Ward Commissioner. He said he would rather see the builder, John J. Brady Inc., find a way to "bring the house into codes."

Peggy Maher of the 500 block of Strathmore Road, March 10, expressed concerns to the Haverford Commissioners about air traffic. She said that years ago, she and her children would sleep out in the back yard listening to the sounds of nature. Now, she said, in the nice weather, the sounds of planes overhead are so distracting that she closes windows to try to keep the noise out.

Haverford teacher on ice after girl reports threatMay 17, 2002 By TIMOTHY LOGUE HAVERFORD - A teacher at Haverford Middle School has been suspended and may face criminal charges after he allegedly pointed a starter's pistol at a 13-year-old student, officials said. Haverford police said the incident occurred shortly after dismissal Tuesday when a small group of female students who were engaging in minor horseplay entered the teacher's classroom. The teacher, a male track coach, asked the girls to stop playing around. When they failed to do so, police said the teacher pulled the starter's pistol out of the pocket of...
