WASHINGTON -- The Nationals made an early summer splash on Monday evening, acquiring right-handed closer Kelvin Herrera from the Royals in exchange for a trio of Minor Leaguers: infielder Kelvin Gutierrez, outfielder Blake Perkins and right-hander Yohanse Morel. The trade helps bolster Washington's bullpen, which has become something of a midsummer tradition, by adding another reliever with experience pitching in high-leverage and big-game situations. And Herrera has been effective this season, recording a 1.05 ERA with 14 saves, 22 strikeouts and two walks allowed in 27 games for Kansas City. To acquire Herrera, who will be a free agent at...

While a few designers have made news saying they would not dress the future first lady, Carolina Herrera said she'd be honored if Melania Trump wore one of her outfits. The famed designer spoke about Trump on the red carpet before she received an honor of her own Tuesday night from the Women's Leadership Council at Lincoln Center. ... But when asked if she would, Herrera said, "Of course I will, as the first lady of this country I will. Of course." She added, "It is an honor to dress the first ladies of the country and it's something to...

She finds the nearly nude sort-of rude! Designer Carolina Herrera, best known for her beautiful silhouettes and classic white shirts, ripped the "almost naked" look worn by so many celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez, recently at red carpet events. Herrera, 76, spoke to the Washington Post about how some of her fellow designers believe "it's so modern to be naked or almost naked" when, in fact, it's counterproductive. "They think it's going to attract younger people if they do those dresses," she reasoned. "No! The almost naked! Oh God!" According to Herrera, stars are doing it for...

The first lady chose a dramatic Carolina Herrera ball gown with a voluminous skirt and lace-overlay top. The blue and black gown is the first dress with sleeves Obama has worn to a state dinner. Previously she donned one-shouldered pieces from Peter Soronen and Doo-Ri Chung, and a strapless gown by Naeem Khan for the administration’s first official state dinner in 2009 for India. The dress includes a black hand-sewn beaded embroidery applique scallop-edged top over a liberty blue silk faille corset, according to a statement from the designer. A wide black velvet belt breaks up the top from the

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - An Arizona man on an Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland tried to open the emergency row exit door as the plane descended into Portland, officials said. The attempt happened on Flight 132 around the 10,000-feet level Monday morning, said Annie Linstrom, a spokeswoman for the Portland International Airport. The flight crew and some fellow passengers restrained 23-year-old Alexander Herrera until the plane landed. Port of Portland police then boarded the plane, which originated in Anchorage, AK, to take him into custody. Passengers told police Herrera made unusual statements before trying to open the door,...

Vancouver, Washington: A day after a poll commissioned by a Washington, D.C., newspaper concluded the 3rd Congressional District race is a dead heat, KING-TV in Seattle released its own poll indicating that Republican candidate Jaime Herrera maintains a hefty 11-point lead over Denny Heck, her Democratic opponent. The new poll, the latest of three conducted for KING-TV by the polling company SurveyUSA, concludes that Herrera is “poised for (a) take-away” in the hotly contested race to succeed Democratic U.S. Rep. Brian Baird.

Republicans received further encouraging word in Southwest Washington's open congressional seat Thursday morning. A new poll from SurveyUSA taken for KING-TV in Seattle shows Republican Jaime Herrera, a state representative from Camas, leading Democrat Denny Heck, 54 percent to 41 percent. The two are vying to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Brian Baird of Vancouver. Interestingly, the poll result is not far off the vote totals gathered by the two parties in last week's non-partisan primaries. The latest results show Republicans with 53.7 percent of the vote to 42.4 percent for the Democrats.

Behind every move out of San Francisco City Hall, there's a healthy dose of personality and politics - and the call for a boycott of Arizona in protest of the state's new law aimed at illegal immigrants is no exception.

You may have heard that a Washington, DC-based organization named FreedomWorks recently endorsed David Castillo in the 3rd Congressional District primary race. FreedomWorks’ website claims the organization is made up of “grassroots volunteers,” and supports those who “fight for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom.” In the past I have been a supporter of FreedomWorks, they have provided support and infrastructure to conservative grassroots over the years. However, this endorsement is very disheartening to me; you see FreedomWorks endorsed Castillo without ever asking Jaime Herrera for an interview or even a single piece of information. I can tell you...

A 22-year-old Fort Worth man died early Saturday in Tyler after he kicked in a door and was shot multiple times by the homeowner, police said. Justin A. Herrera, 22, a University of Texas at Tyler student, died at the East Texas Medical Center from gunshot wounds to the chest, Tyler police said. Robert Delk, 63, told police that he and his wife were awakened about 4:30 a.m. by banging on their door, said Don Martin, a Tyler police spokesman. As a precaution, Delk grabbed his .44-caliber Magnum, and as Delk approached the door, Herrera kicked it in. "He was...

BROWNSVILLE — Former Cameron County Sheriff Conrado Cantu and four co-defendants received prison terms Tuesday for a racketeering enterprise that solicited bribes from drug traffickers in exchange for safe passage through this border county. A stern U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle sentenced Cantu to 24 years and two months in prison, with five years of supervision after his release. Cantu is to serve nearly all of the sentence before he can be freed. The judge said she was personally disappointed Cantu and his friends used his power as sheriff to help distribute illegal drugs while undermining the nation's security. Investigators...

The University of Wisconsin at Madison has a history of being a harbinger for social discontent, and as such is generally unreceptive to the precepts of conservatism. The newest addition to the radical right on campus of a local chapter of an international organization called 'Protest Warrior.'Founded in the midst of the Iraq war debate, the Protest Warriors are a group than infiltrates anti-war protests and demonstrations with the intent of fulfilling their manifesto of 'arming the libert loving Silent Majority with ammo that strikes at the intellectual solar plexus of the left.'At a recent ROTC protest rally, the Protest...

City councilman Carlos Herrera in today’s El Nacional accuses lawyer Socrates Tinaco of stealing a billion bolivars from Danilo Anderson’ apartment. Herrera says Socrates distributed this cash among some workers of the Attorney General’s office. He also says they took other property from Anderson’s home. Now, what I would like to understand is how Herrera finds it perfectly natural that Prosecutor Anderson had some US$ 520,000 at home. How can he even say that those that took the money should be charged for theft? How can he even suggest that Anderson’s house was “dry” of money after four days? Can...

Democrat Touts Poll Showing Him Behind A poll taken last month for former state Sen. Mike Feeley (D) showed him trailing former state GOP Chairman Bob Beauprez by 6 points in the competitive new 7th district. The survey of 463 likely voters had Beauprez leading Feeley 39 percent to 33 percent, with 22 percent of respondents undecided. Conducted by Boulder, Colo.-based Harstad Strategic Research LLC, the poll was in the field Aug. 26-29 and had a margin of error of 4.6 percent. Given that this is considered a tossup race, it is unusual that Feeley's campaign would release a three-week-old...
