Once upon a time, pretty much every city had their own "horror movie hosts" — those hammy guys (and one particular gal) who'd introduce schlocky public-domain flicks at midnight at the local station. I've complained about my hometown before, but am obliged to say at this juncture that in humble Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, we actually had something better. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was produced in 1971 by our one and only TV station, CHCH. This hour-long, 130-episode kids' show combined the mid-century sensibility of Famous Monsters of Filmland with the then-hip look and sound of psychedelia: kaleidoscopic "special effects"...

Out of 22 classic and modern movies The Omen and The Exorcist are the horrors British people find the scariest – and YouGov Profiles reveals some spooky facts about horror fans The number of horror movies released each year has increased hugely since the 1930s, at least doubling since the 1960s. 2007 in particular was a golden year for horror – over 100 million tickets sold led to the genre taking a 7% market share. Coupled with the proliferation in number, horror movies have become increasingly violent, graphic and explicit. The harrowing shower scene in Psycho (1960) looked mild by...
  • How 2017 Became a Landmark Year for Horror Movies

There’s been no shortage of reasons to be afraid in 2017, a year marked by political upheaval, natural disasters, and national tragedies across the board. Yet, contrary to what you might expect, audiences turned out in droves to get an added dose of terror from killer clowns, possessed dolls, and whatever other creepy creations filmmakers conjured up for audiences. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a surprise to see horror do well. The oft-ignored genre has long been a reliable, affordable backbone of the film industry despite the ritual shunning come awards season, but even with that in mind, 2017 has been a truly stunning year for horror. It’s a year of six Stephen King adaptations, when an outright horror film has a shot at a best picture nomination, and when the box office soared to become the biggest, highest-grossing year for horror of all time.

What we have here is the end of an era. One of the few remaining famed original horror movie hosts, John Zacherle, known affectionately to fans as Zacherley, The Cool Ghoul, has passed on at the age of 98! That's quite a run and we're all a lot creepier as a result of his illustrious career! Zacherley was an American television host, radio personality and voice actor known for his long career as a television horror host broadcasting horror movies in Philadelphia and New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. Best known for his character "Roland/Zacherley," he also did...

Okay, we are coming into Halloween Weekend leading into Monday. I expect a whole bunch of horror movies on the tube during the next few days. So my question to you is what is the SCARIEST movie you ever saw and why? I'll lead off by telling you the scariest movie I've seen in the past few years. I found it to be even scarier than "The Exorcist." In this case it was a movie I saw on the tube about a week ago called "The Last Exorcist." It was filmed as if it were a documentary following a Louisiana...

'Actress Ingrid Pitt, who became famous for playing voluptuous vampires in the Hammer Horror films of the 1970s, has died aged 73. She collapsed in London last week while on her way to an event hosted by members of her fan club, her daughter said. The Polish-born star began her career on the stage in East Germany before coming to Britain. After playing secret agent Heidi in the classic war film Where Eagles Dare alongside Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in 1968, she appeared in a series of horror films made by Hammer which quickly gained cult status. Her starring...

One of my favorite websites it aintitcool.com. It's a media fan site geared toward horror, SciFi, anime...that kind of thing. It's also often profane so I always hesitate posting from there. Regardless they have a daily feature titled, aptly enough, "The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day" I love the original Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein so I wanted to post this and share it. I'll post the photo for those who don't want to go to the site.

Why do people occasionally enjoy having the bejesus scared out of themselves by watching horror movies? Maybe it’s a way to relieve stress or to recall vague, primal memories of being hunted. Those regular chompings by various beasties must be wired into our DNA, so seeing an Alien bite into somebody triggers a cellular reaction. A regular squirt of adrenalin into the veins might be a physiological necessity. Doubtless, there are psychological theories aplenty, and probably one of them explains the gory details of today’s theme. However, we can ignore all of these sophistications, because our purpose today is to...
