Tomorrow's "Yarnell 19" memorial is getting out of hand. a temporary cell tower is being erected in the Kohl's parking lot. SS communication? Jamming? Semis with big-screen TVs for parking lot viewing of the memorial. TV trucks with big dish transmitters (NBC will pipe it live, and feed other networks, but lots of local tv crews). The city finally finds it necessary to cut the weeds around the arena area. Civic center, library, local pool to all shut down. Traffic is going to be a nightmare tomorrow. So glad I work from home. Only airport is a small one, Biden...

As the procession escorting the fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots home came past the courthouse plaza in Prescott late Sunday afternoon, more than a thousand people stopped talking. Some put their hands over their hearts, while others clapped. Children waved flags, and many cried. "We want these young families to know how much we appreciate the sacrifice their loved ones made to protect us," Barb Corkle said. "We want to show them that we love them, that we will help them by making donations, and whatever else we can do." The 19 elite firefighters died while attacking the Yarnell Hill Fire...

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- The photograph is powerful -- compelling in the eyes of some, an insult to others -- showing the body bags containing the remains of the 19 Granite Mountain firefighters lined up on the scorched earth, each draped in an American flag. The photo has sparked a public debate after being published Thursday on a social media page dedicated to the elite firefighting crew, who died Sunday fighting the Yarnell Hill fire 30 miles from their home base in Prescott. The bodies had been removed from the scene where the fire swept over them. Prescott fire officials say...

PALMER: Destructive thieves take everything that's not nailed down and then some at headquarters. Daniel Skriloff, an Alaska wildfire fighter, had just come off the line, battling the oppressive heat and smoke of the 12,000-acre Hardluck Creek blaze near Fairbanks, when he got the bad news. Back at the Palmer-based headquarters for the Pioneer Peak Hotshots, thieves -- as part of a storm of theft and destruction -- broke into and stole his Subaru Legacy from the gated parking lot. "It sucks," said the third-year firefighter, who was back in Palmer dealing with insurance forms on Tuesday. "You name it,...

FORT BENNING -- Corp. Eugenio Mendoza, a young veteran of the Iraq war, had to carry his buddy for 50 yards, scale an 8-foot wall and crawl through a water-logged tunnel at the 4th International Sniper Competition, where the challenges are designed to simulate combat scenarios in Afghanistan and Iraq. "It's good stuff we never thought about," said Mendoza, 27, a sniper with the Army's 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. "We're definitely going back and use what we've learned in these events." Military snipers are skilled marksmen who are trained to kill key enemy targets -- usually with...
