“For the last 24 years, rumors have persisted and variations based on memory have persisted concerning the passage of the Hughes Amendment (Machine gun ban) to the 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act,” a Free Republic entry posted today begins. “Hughes Amendment”? Rep. William J. Hughes (D-N.J.) proposed several amendments including House Amendment 777 to H.R. 4332 [4] that would ban a civilian from ownership or transfer rights of any fully automatic weapon which was not registered as of May 19, 1986. The amendment also held that any such weapon manufactured and registered before the May 19 cutoff date could still...

Hughes Amendment vote on YouTube. This is archival footage of the proceedings from when the Hughes Amendment was illegally added to the FOPA of 1986. Ajax22 over at AR15.com got his hands on one of the recently released DVD's of Congressional proceedings. In the above video, we hear a voice vote (that to my ears goes to the Nays) that Rangel calls for the Ayes, a call for a recorded vote that is ignored violating the Congressional Rules at the time, and an absolute cluster-fudge over the rest of the FOPA bill including exactly which Amendments made it on and...

I think one of the most striking things about last night's Illinois primary results for Senate is how poorly both Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk closed. In the December Chicago Tribune poll Giannoulias was at 31%, followed by Cheryle Jackson at 17%, and David Hoffman with 9%. There were 35% undecided. Giannoulias ended up with 39% to 34% for Hoffman and 20% for Jackson. That suggests that over the final seven weeks of the campaign Hoffman picked up more than 70% of those who had been undecided to 23% for Giannoulias and less than 10% for Jackson. Not too impressive...

CHICAGO (CBS) ―Election officials say the crowds of voters just before 9 a.m. could be used as an indicator to determine voter turnout for the rest of the day. Going by that barometer Tuesday morning, turnout will be very light this primary. As CBS 2's Susan Carlson reports, there have been no lines to vote at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church, at 1500 S. Michigan Ave. in the South Loop. The election judges say it's been quiet all morning. But those who did cast ballots came with a purpose and they were well-informed. "I feel it's not only my right...

Republicans, Welcome to Human Resources by John F. Di Leo, for Illinois Review, February 1, 2010 A.D. Good morning, Republicans. Congratulations; you’ve been hired for a job – one of very short duration, but of critical importance. For 13 hours, you'll be working in HR; you’ll be selecting your government. You have quite a task before you. Evaluate a stack of resumes and applications, and decide which of the newcomers is the best choice… and often too, decide which current employees deserve a promotion. When the contract hiring you was originally written, things were a bit different than they are...

The Patrick Hughes for U.S. Senate campaign is proud to announce that Patrick has been endorsed by the Life and Liberty PAC who works to support only candidates who are unequivocally committed in word and deed to the protection of all innocent life. This endorsement joins numerous other pro-life endorsements that Patrick has received, including the Illinois Federation for Right to Life, Family PAC, and Eagle Forum. On February 2nd, pro-life voters across the entire state will tell Mark Kirk that his votes supporting partial birth abortion are unacceptable and there is no more room in Washington for politicians who...

Patrick Hughes is the right choice for U.S. Senate. Hughes is a true conservative outsider who opposes cap-and-trade, bank bailouts, wasteful spending and earmarks. These positions have gained him the support of many Tea Party groups and 9/12 organizations throughout Illinois and the nation and the endorsements of conservative leaders like national radio hosts Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham. Unlike career politicians, Hughes is a small-businessman who has faced the same economic troubles that we have. By contrast, Mark Kirk is not simply an Illinois congressman in Washington, D.C.; Kirk is Washington, D.C. In Illinois, he claims to hold our...

Patrick Hughes, a conservative businessman, takes issue with the Republican establishment's portrayal of Rep. Mark Steven Kirk as the "electable" candidate in next week's Illinois Senate primary. "If Republicans truly want to win that Senate seat, they should get behind me right now," Hughes said Friday. "I can get the base fired up and ready to go, because I'm a traditional Reagan conservative." Illinois is a Democratic-leaning state... Hughes contends, though, that Republican officials are misjudging a midterm election environment that has been marked by a national uprising of conservative voters, angry over the policies pursued by President Obama and...

Republican Congressman Mark Kirk is well ahead of his closest challenger in the race for the Republican Senate nomination in Illinois. GOP voters will pick their candidate on Tuesday. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely Republican Primary voters in the state finds Kirk leading attorney Patrick Hughes 53% to 18%. Twelve percent (12%) prefer some other candidate, and 18% are still undecided. Conservatives have been critical of Kirk for some of his positions in the House, and Hughes, chairman of a group called Sensible Taxpayers Opposed to Increased Taxes, is challenging him from the political right. But 51%...

This past Tuesday in a Lockport restaurant, 18 county and township GOP chairmen declared their support for conservative U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Hughes. The event, hosted by the Will County Tea Party Alliance, marked a first: local Tea Party activists joining with Republicans to support a U.S. Senate candidate ... Hughes' message of less government control and spending would resonate with area voters who are facing growing job uncertainty and seeing the closing of businesses and waning of economic growth in the area, partly due to failure at the nation's capital. ... "There's no way we could vote for Mark...

One of the striking conclusions in the latest Public Policy Polling survey in Illinois isn't who's leading in the quest for a Senate nomination, but how far all the candidates have to go in a very, very short time. The Illinois primary is Feb. 2 -- less than a week away. Yet the poll found that "not sure" was the No. 1 response no matter which current Senate candidate the voters were asked about. The automated hone poll surveyed 1,062 Illinois voters, and has an error margin of 3 percentage points. The poll was taken Jan. 22-25.

Money Bomb: Help Us Reach Our Goal Of $50,000 Today We are exactly one week away from the primary election in Illinois and we have a chance to make a final nationwide push to stop the RINO Mark Kirk from being the Republican nominee. Mark Kirk is the Republican Establishment's liberal golden boy who will turn his back on the Republican Party and its voters the day he is elected. Mark Kirk had no problem bailing out Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama when he voted for Cap and Trade as a Congressman. What will he bailout for them as a...
