Rick Santorum, R- Pa., who has at least 14 commercial weather companies in his home state, according to The Associated Press, introduced a bill in April called the National Weather Services Duties Act that seeks to sharply restrict access to free weather information. With the exception of the "preparation and issuance of severe weather forecasts and warnings designed for the protection of life and property of the general public," the proposed legislation would prohibit the National Weather Service from providing any product or service "that is, or could be provided by the private sector." The depression is moving over sea surface temperatures slightly warmer than 28 degrees c and vertical shear appears to be fairly weak. Very gradual strengthening is indicated...and the levelling off of the Max winds shown later in the forecast period is...

Expect a hurricane season that is more stormy than usual but not as bad as last year, hurricane expert Bill Gray announced in a new forecast Friday. Gray predicted 12 named storms, of which seven will be hurricanes, three of them intense. That compares with a 50-year average of 9.6 storms, 5.9 hurricanes and 2.3 intense hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or stronger. The atmospheric scientist discussed his prediction Friday at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, and his team at Colorado State University released the forecast.
