  • Replacement for Internet Explorer? (vanity)

I have an older relative who is running Internet Explorer 8 on a Windows XP machine. She is finding that she can no longer load many of her favorite sites (no surprise there). So it's time for a new browser. However, it took her quite a while to learn IE: how to add to Favorites, adjust the text size, etc. So I'm hoping there is a replacement browser out there that closely resembles her comfortable old IE 8. Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

The end is finally in sight for Microsoft’s long-fraught Internet Explorer. At the Microsoft Convergence conference yesterday in Atlanta, Georgia, Chris Capossela, Microsoft’s head of marketing, said that the new flagship browser for Windows, which was announced in January and is codenamed Project Spartan, will not be associated with the Internet Explorer brand. While Internet Explorer will still exist on Windows 10 for compatibility purposes, it will take a back seat to the new browser.

Microsoft on Thursday confirmed that Windows was vulnerable to FREAK attacks, and researchers changed their tune, saying Internet Explorer (IE) users were at risk. The news was a turnabout from earlier in the week, when researchers initially fingered only Apple's iOS and OS X and Google's Android operating systems as those that could fall victim to cybercriminals spying on purportedly secure communications between browsers and website servers. By adding Windows to the list, the number of jeopardized users jumped dramatically: Windows powered 92% of all personal computers last month. In a security advisory released Thursday, Microsoft said Windows was, in...

October is stacking up to be a bumper Patch Tuesday update with nine bulletins lined up for delivery — three rated critical. Cloud security firm Qualys estimates two of the lesser "important" bulletins are just as bad however, as they would also allow malicious code injection onto vulnerable systems. Top of the critical list is an update for Internet Explorer that affects all currently supported versions 6 to 11, on all operating system including Windows RT. Vulnerabilities discovered in most versions of Windows Server, Windows 7 and 8, and the .NET framework are covered in the other pair of critical...

Computerworld - Microsoft has quietly stopped serving security updates to Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on consumer and small business Windows 7 PCs unless the customer has successfully applied an April update for the browser. [....] Users who have not installed the IE security update issued on April 8 -- identified by Microsoft as MS14-018 -- on Windows 7, and who rely on Windows Update to download and install fixes, did not receive the June 10 IE update. Nor will IE11 receive any future updates, security or otherwise, until that MS14-018 has been installed. Windows Update will not display the appropriate...

Microsoft has issued a patch for a security vulnerability in Internet Explorer to all versions of Windows, including Windows XP, despite claiming it would release no more patches for the outdated operating system after 8 April 2014. Earlier this week, both the UK and US governments advised citizens to consider using alternatives to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser, after the company discovered a vulnerability that could allow hackers to gain access to users' computers and steal their data. The vulnerability made headlines because it coincided with the end of support for Windows XP, meaning that anyone still running the 13-year-old operating...

Microsoft is helping the estimated hundreds of millions of customers still running Windows XP, which it stopped supporting earlier this month, by providing an emergency update to fix a critical bug in its Internet Explorer browser. Microsoft Corp rushed to create the fix after learning of the bug in the operating system over the weekend when cybersecurity firm FireEye Inc warned that a sophisticated group of hackers had exploited the bug to launch attacks in a campaign dubbed "Operation Clandestine Fox. ...

It's not often that the US or UK governments weigh in on the browser wars, but a new Internet Explorer vulnerability that affects all major versions of the browser from the past decade has forced it to raise an alarm: Stop using IE. The zero-day exploit, the term given to a previously unknown, unpatched flaw, allows attackers to install malware on your computer without your permission. That malware could be used to steal personal data, track online behavior, or gain control of the computer. Security firm FireEye, which discovered the bug, said that the flaw is being used with a...

Hackers are already at work exploiting a newly discovered flaw in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer that has left more than half of the world’s Web browsers vulnerable to attack, including those on many federal government computers. Microsoft said it was aware of “limited target attacks” in a security advisory posted on Saturday. The flaw affects Internet Explorer versions 6 through 11. However, hackers are mostly targeting versions 9 through 11, according to the security firm FireEye, which discovered the flaw.........

A new zero day vulnerability that resides in all versions of Internet Explorer has been spotted in the wild, Microsoft confirmed late Saturday. The vulnerability, which could allow remote code execution, is being used in "limited, targeted attacks," according to an advisory issued by Microsoft. While all versions of the web browser, IE 6 through 11, are affected by the vulnerability, attacks are currently targeting IE versions 9, 10 and 11, according to security firm Fire Eye, which first reported the flaw Friday. The attack leverages a previously unknown "use after free" vulnerability -- data corruption that occurs after memory...

A security flaw has just discovered that lets hackers prey on visitors to a military veterans web page via Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser. According to Reuters, Security firm FireEye Inc. discovered the attacks against Internet Explorer 10 this week, saying hundreds or thousands of machines have been infected. FireEye said the culprits broke into the website of U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars and inserted a link that redirected visitors to a malicious web page that contained the infectious code in Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash software. FireEye researcher Darien Kindlund said hackers were probably seeking information from the machines of...

The new Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 Release Preview is 30 percent faster than the competition, says Microsoft. But more importantly, Web browsing is once again a big deal in Redmond. Buoyed by the good news of market share growth in August for Internet Explorer, Microsoft is touting major improvements in the new Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 Release Preview on Wednesday. The virtual machine version of the IE 11 Release Preview will be available at modern.ie later this week. The IE 11 Release Preview, equivalent to the "release candidate" stage of the traditional software development cycle, is...

The European Union has fined Microsoft €561 million ($733 million) for breaking a pledge to offer personal computer users a choice of Internet browsers when they install the company’s flagship Windows operating system. The penalty imposed by the EU’s executive arm, the Commission, is a first for Brussels: no company has ever failed to keep its end of a bargain with EU authorities before. … The Commission’s top regulator, Joaquin Almunia, said at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, Wednesday that the fine reflected the size of the violation and the length of time it went on. Microsoft will release 12 patches for 57 vulnerabilities next week for Windows, Internet Explorer, and Office. A spattering of enterprise products, including Microsoft Office and Windows Server, and developer tools, such as .NET Framework, will also be patched. Five of the updates are labeled "critical," in which malicious code can be remotely executed on users' machines. Another vulnerability that allows remote code execution is labeled "important." The company's pre-release bulletin warns of two major vulnerabilities for Internet Explorer, which will patch a flaw allowing hackers to run remotely executed code on vulnerable machines. All versions from IE6 to IE10 are...
