Iran's military has postponed a test firing of a new intermediate-range ballistic missile after a shipment of parts from North Korea was delayed, Japan's Kyodo news service reported Dec. 6. The report quoted a western diplomatic source in South Korea familiar with North Korean issues as saying that Tehran told Pyongyang that it needs electronic components for improving the missile's accuracy that were ordered from North Korea. The delay in delivering the parts is a source of friction between the two countries, the source said. According to the report, North Korea has said it shipped the components in 10 containers...

(4th LD) N. Korea gearing up to test-fire missiles on both coasts By Sam Kim SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- North Korea appears to be preparing on both coasts to test-fire some of its most sophisticated ballistic missiles, stoking regional tensions already running high after its second nuclear test last week, South Korean sources said Tuesday. North Korea, which set off an underground nuclear explosion on May 25, has apparently moved an intercontinental ballistic missile to a launch site on its west coast, a South Korean lawmaker said, quoting defense officials who briefed him hours earlier. A South Korean government...

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the Sajjil-2 missile used "advanced technology" and had "landed exactly" on the unspecified target. He was speaking in Semnan, from where the missile, with a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles), was reportedly launched. Correspondents say the test may be seen as provocative by Iran's Arab neighbours and its enemies in the West. "The defence minister [Mohammed Najjar] told me today that we launched a Sajjil-2 missile, which is a two-stage missile and it has reached the intended target," Mr Ahmadinejad told a crowd in the northern town. He said the missile used solid fuel and was...

In what has become an annual event over the last few years, there are another batch of rumors out of China that the DF-21 ballistic missile has been equipped with a high-explosive warhead and a guidance system that can find and hit a aircraft carrier at sea. The DF-21 has a range of 1800 kilometers and normally hauls a 300 kiloton nuclear warhead. It's a two stage, 15 ton, solid fuel rocket that could carry a half ton penetrating, high-explosive warhead, along with the special guidance system (a radar and image recognition system). As the story goes, the Chinese have...

Agni missile to get multiple warheads Ajai Shukla / Hyderabad January 28, 2008 If the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is the heart of India’s nuclear deterrent, the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in Hyderabad is its limbs and sinews. The ASL Director, Avinash Chander, takes us through a spotless assembly room, where technicians are bolting sensitive instruments into the nose of a giant Agni-3 missile. It is eerie; before long, this very missile will roar off a launch pad on Wheeler’s Island in Orissa. It will travel 350 km above the earth, re-enter the atmosphere at a speed of 5 kilometers...

India set to test upgraded ballistic missile in 2009 14:21 | 07/ 01/ 2008 NEW DELHI, January 7 (RIA Novosti) - India will test fire a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with the range of up to 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) in the beginning of 2009, a senior defense research official said on Monday. The new missile, dubbed as Agni III+ is an upgraded version of the Agni III intermediate-range ballistic missile developed by India. Taking a major leap in missile technology, India on Thursday successfully test-fired its most powerful nuclear capable intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-III from the Interim Test Range at the Wheeler's Island in the Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast. The indigenously developed two-stage, all-solid fuel, 16-meter-long missile weighing 48 tonnes blasted off at 10.52 am from a fixed platform with the help of an auto launcher in the launch complex-4 of the ITR, located about 72 km from Balasore, defence officials said. The surface-to-surface missile with a strike range of over 3,000 km and capacity to carry a payload...

DoD Finds Cruise Missile Defense 'Gaps' InsideDefense.com NewsStand | John Liang | August 17, 2006 A Pentagon assessment of the U.S. capability to defend the homeland against incoming enemy cruise missiles has found what it calls “capability gaps” that may not be solved until 2015. As a result, the Air Force's directorate of operational capability requirements is leading a Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System study “to determine the best approaches for mitigating high-risk joint gaps in the [Homeland Air and Cruise Missile Defense of North America] mission area,” according to an Aug. 9 request for information posted on Federal...
  • North Korea May Have Tested New Longer-Range Missiles

    07/17/2006 8:56:18 PM PDT · by HAL9000 · 2 replies · 545+ views
Intelligence services in Seoul and Washington are analyzing suspicions that the seven missiles North Korea test-fired on July 5 include two new intermediate-range ballistic missiles with a range of 2,500-4,000 km. A government source said spy agencies detected electronic signals different from the North’s Rodong or Scud missiles from two of six medium-range missiles the North test-launched on July 5. Intelligence services considered whether they could be Scud-ERs with a range of up to 1,000 km, but additional analysis produced the suspicion that they could be a whole new type of IRBM, the source said. If so, they are...

LONDON — Libya has signed a $13.5 billion weapons deal with Iran for ballistic missiles with chemical warheads and the training to deploy and operate them. The Berlin-based Die Welt daily reported that Iran and Libya signed the accord in June 2002. Western intelligence sources said the deal was meant to bolster Libya's missile and weapons of mass destruction programs. Iran pledged to train Libya in missiles and the production and use of chemical weapons. Under the contract, Libya would obtain chemical warheads for its extended-range Scud-class missiles.
