House Republicans are up in arms over a plan by the new Democratic chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee that could abolish the panel’s anti-terrorism subcommittee and replace it with one that will focus in part on President Trump’s business interests and how they affect U.S. foreign policy. The reorganization eyed by new committee Chairman Eliot Engel, New York Democrat, was first reported by The New Yorker. “I am disappointed with [Mr. Engel‘s] reported plans to eliminate the Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade Subcommittee for one dedicated to investigations,” Texas Rep. The only two Muslims in the U.S. Congress are calling for a Department of Justice investigation into the armed anti-Islam rally in Phoenix last week. Jon Ritzheimer organized the rally, along with a Muhammad cartoon contest, in response to the targeting of a similar event held in Garland, Texas weeks ago. The rally was held at an Islamic community center reportedly attended by the two men who targeted the Garland event. The Democratic National Committee is raising a number of eyebrows after choosing to proceed with hosting Islamic “Jumah” prayers for two hours on the Friday of its convention, though it denied a Catholic cardinal’s request to say a prayer at the same event. Watch the promotional video, via the Bureau of Muslim Affairs, which is partnering with the DNC for the event. A Republican congressman has told constituents that unless immigration is tightened, "many more Muslims" will be elected and follow the lead of a recently elected lawmaker who plans to use the Quran at his ceremonial swearing-in. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., made the comments in a letter sent earlier this month to hundreds of constituents who had written to him about Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat and the first Muslim elected to Congress.
