Charlie Brown would certainly be proud of this "great pumpkin." NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has found a massive nebula in deep space that "looks like a celestial jack-o'-lantern." The study's researchers have given it the nickname "Jack-o'-lantern Nebula," apropos for Halloween. It's likely that a star, known as an O-type star, approximately 15 to 20 times heavier than our Sun, is "responsible for sculpting this cosmic pumpkin," NASA JPL said in a statement on its website.

I’ve had a request from Freeper MomwithHope to post this month on ‘Hearty Fall Fare’ - and even though it’s still hot here in DC, with Wednesday threatening record-breaking temperatures, the leaves are falling and the trees are beginning to morph into their Autumn glory. We can smell Fall. One of my first posts to FR, before I officially began this cooking thread, was about Virginia Peanut Soup. I can still remember how surprised I was on tasting it - while there was little in the soup other than peanuts, it was so rich and the flavor so unexpected. I...

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- President Hugo Chavez urged Venezuelan parents not to dress their children in costumes for Halloween, calling it a U.S. custom that has no place in the South American country's cultural traditions. Speaking during his weekly radio and television show Sunday, Chavez called Halloween a "gringa," or North American, custom. "Families go and begin to disguise their children as witches," Chavez said. "That is contrary to our ways." Chavez said he was urging Venezuelans to reflect on the subject. In recent years it has become common to see Venezuelan parents holding parties for children dressed as ghouls,...

Re-focus Halloween! If your school insists on having some kind of Halloween celebration, recommend that they steer away from the ghoulish and occult and, instead, focus on the event as a fall festival. ... "When you turn evil into a game, it trivializes it and numbs children to its darkness." (excerpt from email) GREAT RESOURCE SITE for Teachers, Parents & Students.

The Associated Press 10/31/2003, 3:21 p.m. ET BOSTON (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on Friday accused the Bush administration of packing the federal bench with right-wing ideologues and defended Senate Democrats' blocking of four of President Bush's nominations. The Massachusetts Democrat's comments came a day after Mississippi judge Charles Pickering became the fourth of Bush's judicial nominees to be filibustered by Democrats. Speaking to a gathering of students from five Boston-area law schools, Kennedy called the Senate's ability to block judicial nominations "one of the most important checks and balances in the Constitution." "Many of President Bush's nominees...
