DEAR man on the street, I’m writing to ask for your help. As a female runner, I am constantly aware of my safety when I’m out on an evening run. What is behind me? Do I hear anything strange? Why is that man running towards me? What is making those bushes rustle? And I am always home before dark. Author Margaret Atwood said, “Men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them.” You may think that’s hyperbole, but I promise you, it’s not. Every woman I know has been in a situation at least...

Austin, Texas Police Chief Art Acevedo was asked to defend the actions of his officers, who subdued and arrested a jogging woman because she was wearing earbuds and couldn’t hear their instructions. His response to the controversy was this: It could be worse–at least she wasn’t sexually assaulted. That response upset many Texas residents, and Acevedo was forced to walk back his comments on Monday. Austin police arrested the jogging woman last week. They were stationed at an intersection near the University of Texas’s Austin campus, giving jaywalking tickets to dozens of people. The woman ran right past them, unable...

For a few days, it seemed that the strange tale of the unidentified jogger who had lain unconscious in a Brooklyn hospital for a week after collapsing in Prospect Park on New Year’s Eve would end happily. When his half brother identified him this week as Rynn Berry, it was too late; he was taken off life support on Thursday. When emergency responders took Mr. Berry, carrying keys and an asthma inhaler but no identification, to the hospital at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31, he had already gone into cardiac arrest and he soon lost brain function.

Driving along at 35 MPH on a 2-lane avenue around 10 PM, a single headlight appeared in my car's path. I swerved onto a side street, shaken and uncomprehending. Leering down at me, astride a high tech bike, I could see in the light of the street lamp the person responsible for the near-miss. I rolled down the window and said -- remaining surprisingly noncombative -- "Hey man, I barely missed hitting you. You could have been killed." Expecting a thank you or an apology, instead I was the victim of an insane tirade, to the effect: "Hey buddy, you...
