Ohio lawmakers voted Thursday to override Governor Kasich's veto on a self-defense gun bill Now, major changes will be coming to the way prosecutors handle self-defense cases and to gun laws across the state. House Bill 228 was once a "stand your ground" bill but turned into a self-defense bill after it received some opposition at the statehouse. Over the summer, anti-gun violence group Moms Demand Action went to the statehouse to try and stop the bill from passing.

Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich’s veto opposing a bill for gun owners’ rights was overturned by the Republican-led state legislature Thursday. The state House first voted to overturn Kasich’s veto on the bill, which makes it easier for off-duty police officers to access guns and also changes laws regarding self-defense cases. The state Senate then voted later, 21-11, turning down Kasich’s veto on the legislation, The Associated Press reported. The bill was heavily supported by pro-gun groups in the state that pushed lawmakers to overturn the veto.

Today, outgoing Ohio Gov. John Kasich vetoed for the second time a bill that would have prevented babies with beating hearts from being aborted. Kasich, a former Republican presidential candidate, touted his allegedly “pro-life” views as he explained his veto. “As governor, I have worked hard to strengthen Ohio’s protections for the sanctity of human life, and I have a deep respect for my fellow members of the pro-life community and their ongoing efforts in defense of unborn life,” said Kasich. “However, the central provision of Sub. H.B. 258, that an abortion cannot be performed if a heartbeat has been detected in...

Before vetoing House Bill 228, Gov. John Kasich expressed frustration Wednesday about how politics have blocked him from passing a "Red Flag Law," allowing the courts to take away a person's gun if he or she is unstable, and the growing connection with public shootings. "It never existed in America and we can't do anything because of rotten, stinkin' politics," Kasich said. Then, he commented about House Bill 228. "So, why would I sign a bill that gives more power to the gun advocates," he said. "I hate to jump on the bash-Kasich bandwagon, but in this case, he's really...

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) said Sunday that he is "very seriously considering" another bid at the presidency in 2020 and raised the possibility of running on a bipartisan ticket. "These are earnest conversations that go on virtually every day with some of my friends, with my family. We need different leadership. There isn’t any question about it," he said on ABC's "This Week." Kasich said that "all options are on the table" for his potential bid, including running on a bipartisan ticket. The Ohio governor, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in 2016, raised the possibility that President...

It was only a few weeks ago when outgoing Ohio Governor John Kasich said he was seriously considering a 2020 primary challenge to President Trump, if only to “send a message.” (Who that message was intended for remains unclear.) But hey… the guy is going to be unemployed come January so he needs something to keep himself busy. But now, with Christmas fast approaching, something seems to have changed. During an interview with the Associated Press, Kasich was striking a decidedly different tone. Clearly, if you’re going to mount a primary challenge, you need to believe that you at least have...

Departing Ohio Gov. John Kasich seemingly wants it both ways. The President Donald Trump-bashing Republican, long in demand on TV political talk shows, thinks it “likely” he will end up in the news media, hopefully in some “unique” role on television. But at the same time, the last candidate standing in the way of Trump in the 2016 Republican primaries is keeping the runway clear for another potential run for the presidency. GOP candidates nervy enough to oppose Trump, or pursuing an obstacle-strewn run as an independent, need to get serious soon about their 2020 candidacies. However, in an 85-minute...

Outgoing Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Thursday that he’d prefer to run for president as a Republican, but only if he’s entering a primary he could win. In an interview with The Associated Press, Kasich acknowledged he probably couldn’t defeat President Donald Trump if the election were held today. He says he’s seriously considering his options and letting his advisers monitor the daily troubles Trump is facing, including talk of impeachment. “If you’re going to run as a Republican you have to have a sense that if you get into primaries you can win. Right now, probably couldn’t win,” he...

Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich's chief political strategist has a message for President Donald Trump: "Be careful what you wish for." Earlier, a Fox News interviewer asked the president about the possibility of Kasich or retiring Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., running against him in 2020, and Trump responded, "I hope so." John Weaver, the Kasich strategist, responded to the remark with a warning. "Be careful what you wish for," Weaver said in a message to CNBC.

Former GOP Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.) on Sunday said he believes the Democratic Party could win in 2020 if they pick someone "unexpected" as their party's presidential nominee. Santorum, asked if there were any potential Democratic candidates he was afraid of, pointed to previous presidential contests, saying all of the Democratic candidates who won were "not the favorite" at the time. "When the Democrats win, they pick someone unexpected or someone who’s not the favorite," Santorum, a CNN analyst, said on CNN's "State of the Union." "[Former Presidents] Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter," he listed. "When they pick [failed...

Ohio Governor John Kasich said Tuesday that we’re in danger of seeing our moral standing in the world eroded, thanks in part to the news that the U.S. would move forward with an arms deal with Saudi Arabia. “I just want to tell you that we're in danger of seeing our moral standing in the world eroded,” said Kasich during an interview Tuesday. “I happened to meet a tremendous prisoner of conscience a man by the name of Anatoly Sharansky who sat in the Soviet gulag for many years and was defiant about his seeking freedom and not caving to...

Oh, John Kasich, how many times you have betrayed your party, your state, and your country — so many that we've lost count. The most recent entry to the list is the Ohio governor's announcement that he will veto two bills that are near and dear to the hearts of conservatives who propelled him to victory in 2010 and 2014: The aptly named "heartbeat bill" and "stand your ground" legislation. Kasich told reporters outside his office Monday that he opposes both bills. If Kasich follows through with the veto threat, this will be the second time in two years he's...

Ohio Governor John Kasich, a possible 2020 candidate, slammed Donald Trump for dividing the country by playing the “blame game.” “What I have resented and disliked about the president is instead of being a unifier and someone who can dig deep into people’s problems and say ‘yes those are problems, but together we can fix them,’ he has played a blame game," Kasich commented during a speech in New Hampshire at the Loeb School’s First Amendment Gala on Thursday. "He has allowed people to consider themselves victims," Kasich said, and fostered the idea in them that if good things failed...

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was on a three-city swing through New Hampshire this week, potentially feeling out a 2020 run for the White House as a Republican, or as an independent. When CNN asked Kasich during a stop in Manchester, N.H., about how he's calculating his chances, the governor replied, "I don't do math calculations. That's not what I do." "I mean, all options are on the table. And the question is, ultimately, can I have a very positive impact on the country, and I've got lots of people here who were saying to me just -- I was here...

French President Emmanuel Macron’s thinly-veiled shots at President Trump over the weekend won at least one hearty American “oui” — from Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Mr. Kasich, a frequent critic of Mr. Trump, took to Twitter to second Mr. Macron’s attack on “nationalism” at a speech Sunday marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. “@EmmanuelMacron is right,” Mr. Kasich tweeted, going on to quote what the French leader said in front of Mr. Trump, who has taken much criticism as racist for calling himself a “nationalist.”
